As we transition fully into wintery weather, we also transition into an exciting
time in the school year. All of the planning, dedication and focus of the
summer and fall of our teachers, staff, volunteers and students are beginning
to evolve into tremendous growth and progress for our students. Students are
proud to show off their writing projects, math problem solving and new
vocabulary when I visit their classroom and chat with them around the school.
It is rewarding this time of year to feel like you can actually see the light bulbs
clicking on all around us!
A few other things that are clicking on all around us:
*Our staff, students and community donated over 1,000 cans for our
community’s canned food drive and generously contributed to our school’s toy,
underwear & socks drive. All of these contributions have and will continue to
directly benefit our own students and families as well as the larger community!

*Read-A-Thon: Our students have finish participating in our PTA’s Read-AThon. All pledge sheets and money have should already turned in to the
office. Students where so excited to share their reading goals, progress and
pledges they have already collected- we love it when kids love to read to help
make their school a better place!
* State Testing will start soon (late February & early March) on the Oregon
Assessment of Knowledge & Skills (OAKS) for 3rd, 4th & 5th graders in
reading and math, as well as The English Language Proficiency Assessment
(ELPA) for all of our students receiving English as a Second Language
support. Check with your child or their teacher for when they will be tested
specifically. As a parent, you can help your child do their best by encouraging
them to relax and also ensuring they get a good night’s sleep and a healthy
breakfast each day. This year, the “meeting” scores have been raised in
Oregon, so students will need to score at a
higher rate then in previous years in order to meet the benchmark.
As I look out the window, it’s a steady rain. But I am encouraged because I know that our teachers and
students are steadily learning and growing together right this minute...off I go to catch up with them!

El Puente and Riverside schools are K-5 elementary school programs that provide a dual-immersion
education in both Spanish and English, including students who are native English speakers as well as those
who are native Spanish speakers. By the end of fifth grade, all students become fluent in both languages.
Applications are due Thursday, March 22 by 3:30 p.m. Acceptance and waiting list letters will be mailed by
April 16. If the number of kindergarten applicants exceeds the number of spots available, admission will be
determined by lottery.
Milwaukie Academy of the Arts invites prospective students to visit and apply
Families looking for an arts-focused college preparatory high school are invited to visit and apply to Milwaukie Academy of
the Arts.
Milwaukie Academy of the Arts, a public charter school in the North Clackamas District, is open to students from any
Oregon school district. The curriculum features arts-based learning in core academic classes, plus a personalized, small
school environment. The school is located on the campus of Milwaukie High: 11300 SE 23rd Ave. in Milwaukie.
MAA students have the freedom to participate in elective classes, sports, and activities at Milwaukie High, ranging from
drama, visual arts and music to world languages, AP courses, and advanced science.
Students can also choose from 15 programs at the Sabin-Schellenberg Professional-Technical Center, pursuing interests
from interior design and broadcasting to computer aided design and fashion design. Many courses provide students with
the chance to earn college credit.
“This school is a good fit for any college-bound student, and also for teens with a more hands-on learning style,” explained
Director Tim Taylor. “Not every student learns the same way, and here at Milwaukie Academy of the Arts, we not only
understand that – we welcome it.”

Talented and Gifted Referral Period
North Clackamas School District
The North Clackamas School District is committed to an educational program that recognizes the unique value,
needs and talents of each individual student. Curriculum and instruction designed to meet the level and rate of
learning of each high ability student are integral parts of this commitment.
This month has been designated as the TAG referral period for this school year in district elementary schools. During
this time, parents and teachers are invited to nominate students performing in the top 3% of the student population. If
you are interested in nominating your student for this program, both the parent and teacher should complete referral
questionnaires available in the school office. Once completed, these questionnaires should be returned to the school
office by March.
Characteristics of students academically talented in math include:
*derives solutions and conveys thinking through the use of mathematical equations and words; advanced computation skills.
*grasps concepts; makes quick valid generalizations and enjoys challenges of difficult problems and assignments.
*likes logic and problem-solving games: can anticipate ahead.
Characteristics of students academically talented in reading include:
*reads advanced materials beyond age expectancy and chooses a variety of challenging materials.
*demonstrates comprehension through discussion of materials read by making inferences and analyzing content.
*extends vocabulary with new words encountered in print.
Characteristics of intellectually gifted students include:
*tries to discover the how and why of things and becomes absorbed and involved in topics.
*heightened need to seek understanding and truth, to gain knowledge to analyze, and to synthesize.
*keen sense of observation, detailed planning, and visual recall.

Music Note
Happy February to Riverside musicians! Weʼre having a
great time with our keyboards; all students are playing
songs on keyboards, and 4th and 5th graders are
composing their own songs! Weʼll have a guest musician
share some piano skills with us on March 9 to celebrate the end of
our keyboard unit.
In April, recorder practice will begin in 4th and 5th Grade classes. I
will have recorders for students to use in Music classes. If you would
like to buy a plastic soprano recorder of your own, that is fine. Itʼs
helpful for students to have a recorder to practice with at home!

New rule affects OAKS
retesting in grades 3-8
Some students take state tests multiple times, particularly if the student's score does not reflect the studentʼs
performance level on daily work.
A new state law allows repeat testing of students who have met or exceeded the Oregon Assessment of
Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) standards for a given school year only if the student's parent or guardian allows it.
If your student has met or exceeded the OAKS standards this school year and you do not want him or her to take it
again, please notify your schoolʼs office. If the school does not hear from you, the school may proceed with
retesting students who met or exceeded standards.
Your child or teen can have health coverage.
We know an education is the best gift we can give our children. We also know that healthy kids
learn better and healthy kids start with health coverage that their families can afford.
Healthy Kids is Oregon’s newly expanded no-­‐cost and low-­‐cost health coverage program for
uninsured kids and teens up to 19 years of age. Healthy Kids is comprehensive coverage offering
medical, dental, vision, prescription, and behavioral health coverage.
No family makes too much money for Healthy Kids. Parent’s income will determine whether a child
is eligible for the no-­‐cost or low-­‐cost coverage option. For example, a family of four that earns as
much as $67,200 a year may qualify for low-­‐cost coverage.

February is National Dental Month! Our school district provides several prevention opportunities
to students.
We offer dental sealants to Title 1 elementary school students grades 1st and 2nd. This is a fantastic
opportunity from a State grant. Sealants are applied to permanent molars. They give many years of decay
protection.
The water in Clackamas County is not fluoridated. Because of this, tooth decay is more prevalent. Title 1
schools offer daily fluoride to students. This is another State grant we use to help our kids get healthy.
The North Clackamas branch of Stand for Children received a grant for a dental coordinator. Because of
this, many elementary children in need of immediate dental care can receive free services at the mobile
dental van. Hygienists have gone to schools to screen student’s teeth and prioritized dentist visits for
these kids.
There is another free program in our state that can provide free or low cost dental visits. It is called “The

A medida que pasamos este clima invernal, nos acercamos mas hacia cosas
emocionantes este año.Toda la planificación, la dedicación y el enfoque del
verano y el otoño de nuestros maestros, personal, voluntarios y estudiantes
están empezando a convertirse en un enorme crecimiento y el progreso de
nuestros estudiantes. estudiantes están orgullosos de mostrar sus proyectos de
escritura, resolver problemas matemáticos y nuevo vocabulario. Cuando visito
sus salónes de clases y hablar con ellos alrededor de la escuela. Es muy
gratificante esta época del año para sentirse como usted puede ver como sus
"focos" prenden a nuestro alrededor.
Algunas otras cosas que estan pasando alrededor de nosotros:
Nuestro personal, estudiantes y la comunidad donaron más de 1.000 latas para
nuestro recolección de alimentos enlatados y han contribuido generosamente a
nuestra recolección de juguete, ropa interior y calcetines. Todas estas
contribuciones benefician y seguirán beneficiando directamente a nuestros
propios estudiantes y

*Maraton de Lectura: Nuestros estudiantes están participando actualmente en
el maraton de lectura-del PTA. Todas las hojas de promesa y el dinero ya

los alumnos de tercero, cuarto ó quinto en lectura y matemáticas, así como la
Evaluación de Dominio del Idioma Inglés (ELPA) para todos nuestros los
estudiantes que reciben apoyo de Inglés como Segundo Idioma. Consulte con
su hijo o su maestro para cuando le tocara tomar la prueba . Como padre, usted
puede ayudar a su hijo hacer todo lo posible por relajarse y también asegurarse
de que duerman bien y un tengan un desayuno saludable todos los días. Este
año, las puntuaciones para pasar el examen han aumentado en Oregon, por lo
que los estudiantes necesitarán anotar una puntuacion más alta que en años
anteriores con el fin de cumplir con la puntuacion requerida.
Al mirar por la ventana, y mirar la lluvia constante. Pero me anima porque sé
que nuestros profesores y estudiantes están constantemente aprendiendo y creciendo juntos en este mismo
momento ... me voy para ponerse al día con ellos!

Las escuelas El Puente y Riverside son tienen un programa que brindan educación de inmersión dual en español y en
Inglés, incluyendo estudiantes que son hablantes nativos de Inglés, así como aquellos que son hablantes nativos de
español. Al final del quinto grado, todos los estudiantes hablaran fluidamente en ambos idiomas.
Las solicitudes deberán ser regresadas antes del jueves, 22 de marzo las 3:30 pm. Las cartas de admision y lista de
espera será enviada por correo el 16 de abril. Si el número de solicitantes excede el numero de cupo , la admisión será

Distrito de North Clackamas
El Distrito Escolar de North Clackamas se ha comprometido a un programa educativo que reconoce
el valor único, necesidades y talentos de cada estudiante. Currículo y la instrucción diseñado para
cumplir con el nivel y ritmo de aprendizaje de cada alumno de alta capacidad son parte integral de
este compromiso.
Este mes ha sido designado como el período de referencia TAG para este año escolar en las escuelas de
primaria del distrito. Durante este tiempo, los padres y profesores están invitados a nominar a estudiantes
que se desempeñan en el 3% de la población estudiantil. Si usted está interesado en nominar a su hijo para

Academia de Arte de Milwaukie esta Buscando Estudiantes

Academia de Arte de Milwaukie, una escuela pública en el Distrito de North Clackamas, está

Notas de Musica
Feliz febrero a los músicos de Riverside! Estamos
teniendo un buen rato con nuestros teclados, todos
los estudiantes están tocando canciones en los
teclados, y alumnos de 4 º y 5 º está componiendo
sus propias canciones! Vamos a tener a un músico invitado que
compartira algunos de sus conocimientos de piano con nosotros
el 9 de marzo para celebrar el final de nuestra unidad de teclado.
En abril, la práctica de flauta comenzará en las clases de 4to y
5to grado. Voy a tener flautas que pueden usar los estudiantes
en las clases de música. Si usted desea comprar una flauta
soprano de plástico por su cuenta, estária muy bien. Es útil que
los estudiantes tengan una flauta en la casa para práctica con
ella.

Nueva norma que afectara a OAKS
Repetición de pruebas en los grados 3-8
Algunos estudiantes toman los exámenes estatales múltiples veces, particularmente si la calificación del
estudiante no refleja el nivel de desempeño en su trabajo diario.
Una nueva ley estatal permite que los estudiantes que han alcanzado o excedido los estándares de la Evaluación
de Conocimiento y Habilidades de Oregon (OAKS) en un año escolar repitan el examen solo si el estudiante o el
guardián lo autorizan.
Si su estudiante ha alcanzado o excedido los estándares de OAKS este año escolar y no desea que tome el
examen nuevamente, por favor notifique a la oficina escolar. Si no recibimos su notificación, la escuela procederá
con el examen nuevamente para estudiantes que han alcanzado o excedido los estándares.
Su niño o adolescente pueden tener cobertura de salud
Sabemos que la educación es el mejor obsequio que les podemos dar a nuestros hijos. También sabemos que los niños sanos tienen un mejor aprovechamiento académico, y para que los niños estén sanos necesitan una cobertura de salud que esté al alcance del bolsillo de las familias. Febrero, Mes Nacional de la Salud Dental
Nuestro distrito escolar ofrece varias oportunidades de prevención para los estudiantes. Ofrecemos los
selladores dentales alos estudianted de escuelas de título 1. Esta es una oportunidad fantástica gracias a
una beca del Estado. Los selladores se aplican en las muelas permanentes.
Debido a que el agua en el Condado de Clackamas no es fluorada, la caries dental es más frecuente.
Escuelas de Título 1 también ofrecen fluoruro a diario a los estudiantes a través de otra beca estatal que
utilizamos para ayudar a nuestros niños estar saludable.
Norte Clackamas, "Stand for Children", recibió una beca para un coordinador de odontología. Debido a esto,
muchos niños de primaria en la necesidad de atención dental inmediata pueden recibir servicios gratuitos en
la Van dental móvil. Higienistas han ido a las escuelas para revisar los dientes de los estudiantes y dar
