Ms. Debbie Patrick, Nutrient Management Advisor
for Baltimore County Extension for over 20 years, has
retired, effective January 1, 2015. The search is on for
her permanent replacement. Should you or anyone
you know be interested in the position, it will soon be
posted on our website ( https://extension.umd.edu/
anmp ) under Job Openings.
Those of you in need of a nutrient management
plan (NMP) update for 2016 need not worry, as the
plans will get done. Nutrient Management Specialist
Loretta Collins will be serving as the interim advisor
until a permanent replacement for Debbie is found.
Loretta will be in the Baltimore office Mondays
and Tuesdays, 9:00-3:30. Messages can be left with
reception (410-887-8090) or via direct email to Loretta
any day of the week: collins2@umd.edu
Reminders:
Annual Implementation Forms (AIRs) from the
MDA should be arriving in mailboxes soon. The
AIR always asks for up-to-date information on your
nutrient management plan (NMP). NMPs are valid
for a specified period of time, usually one growing
season, but not to exceed three years. Your NMP
must be up-to-date in order to remain in compliance
with Maryland state regulations. Call your nutrient
management advisor if you are unsure of your status.
You need a NMP if your agricultural operation:
• Earns a gross annual income of $2,500 or
greater and/or
• Maintains 8,000 pounds or greater of live
animal weight
Soil test results are valid for three years from date of
analysis and must be valid throughout the duration of
your NMP. Manure analysis is required yearly, should
you be applying it to your fields.
NMP updates are required before application of
any commercial fertilizer or manure to your fields.

2016 GAP-Food Safety Training Program for Fresh Fruit and
Vegetable Producers
The Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA)
and University of Maryland Extension (UME) will be
conducting a central Maryland food safety training
workshop for fruit and vegetable producers.
This one-day workshop is important for small- and
large- scale producers who want to understand how
to meet current U.S. Food and Drug Administration
food safety requirements or are considering Good
Agricultural Practice (GAP) certification. The training
will provide assistance in writing and implementing a
GAP program for both wholesale growers and direct
marketers.
Topics covered include: highlights of the federal
Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA); Good
Agricultural Practices such as addressing pre-harvest
and post-harvest water quality issues; an update on
current food safety research; writing a food safety
plan; and MDA/University of Maryland programs to
assist producers in implementing GAP. A portion of
the training will be spent helping producers write their
own food safety plans. Producers are encouraged to
bring their own personal laptops. Laptops will also be
provided to those who cannot bring them.
Date and Location: The workshop will take place
March 15, 2016 from 8:30 am to 4 pm. The fee for
the program will be $25, and will cover lunch costs
and materials provided to each participant. Attendees
will receive a certificate of participation following the
program. The location is the Carroll County Extension
office, 700 Agriculture Center; Westminster, MD 21157
Registration: Participants are encouraged to
register. If you have questions or encounter difficulties
registering online, please contact Bryan Butler
(email: bbutlers@umd.edu , telephone: 410 386-2760)
or Dave Martin (email: dmarti@umd.edu or telephone
410-887-8090). Registration is required to ensure
adequate materials are available.
Other information: Other programs will be offered
in Washington County, St. Mary’s County, Wicomico
County and at the Wye REC in Queenstown.
MDA offers two GAP certification programs for fruit
and vegetable producers.
• MDA GAP certification is geared toward direct
marketers or other producers that want to start
with a basic food safety program and is available to
Maryland fruit and vegetable producers at no cost.
• USDA GAP/GHP and USDA Harmonized GAP preharvest and post-harvest certification is provided
through a cooperative agreement with USDA,
Agricultural Marketing Service and is a nationally
recognized certification that meets the requirements
of many wholesale buyers. USDA specialty crop
grant funding is available for cost share of the USDA
audit fees.
For more information on these programs, contact
Deanna Baldwin with the Maryland Department of
Agriculture at Deanna.baldwin@maryland.gov or
410-841-5769 or Justine Beaulieu with University of
Maryland at jbeauli1@umd.edu or 301-405-7543.
