Many thanks to the volunteers that helped and all the educators that shared their many talents. 4-Hers had a chance to weld, ride a tractor or lawn tractor, build bridges, tables, catapults and towers, make lamps, fix bikes, work with robotics and wind power. We hope to see many of you next year. Meet a club leader 1.When did you first join 4-H & what was the name of the club? I accompanied my two children to their first 4-H meeting in October 2007. It was the Dairy Goat Club monthly meeting. My son was interested in getting goats and I knew NOTHING about them. We went to the meeting to see what we could learn. The kids became members in 2008 and I became a certified volunteer in the summer of 2008. 2.How did you end up serving as a club leader? Annette O’Brien, the Dairy Goat Club leader, was ready to “retire” from club leadership when her granddaughter went off to college. Enrollment in the club was down so there were not many options. I agreed to take on the club leader role because I saw the value in the club to the remaining members and Mike Spencer was very persuasive. 3.What is your favorite 4-H memory? My favorite memory is the first time my children showed their goats at the 2008 Baltimore County Fair. Their apprehension turned to such joy and pride at what they were able to accomplish by getting through that first show. The experience of that first show kept them interested and excited and allowed them to start their growth in other 4-H activities. 4.Who has played a huge role in your 4-H experience? Annette O’Brien and Mike Spencer have demonstrated the values of 4-H on a regular and consistent basis. They are tremendous supporters of 4-H, the kids, and their parents. They have been role models for me on what a 4-H leader should be. Mike’s boys are long out of active participation but he remains active in the Dairy Goat Club and Annette is still helping out, even in her “retirement”. 5.What was your favorite 4-H event? Without question, my favorite event is the Baltimore County Fair. I enjoy watching the kids have such a great time, make new friends, and experience all the hard work and talent of the other participants. People can’t understand why I would take a week of vacation to sleep in a barn. If they tried it and saw all the wonderful things that happen at the Fair, they would know. Who is he? Steve Bartenfelder Dairy Goat Club Goat Club News On March 20th, 2012 the Baltimore County Dairy Goat Club had a debate on whether or ot a goat should be a pet or livestock. They divided into two teams. Each team had to research their position. They chose a representative to share their position. Each side spoke for about 5 minutes. The judge, Mr. Chris McCollum, Excutive Director for the Ag Center, asked each team to consider how the goat affects their neighbors. Then each team selected someone to represent them and they shared their answer. Adventures in AGsploration Program The University of Maryland Extension AGsploration action team is excited to announce that they will be offering six “Adventures in AGsploration” programs this summer throughout Maryland. The Baltimore County 4-H office along with a 4-H Volunteer chair has traditionally held 2 countywide PRESENTATIONS demonstration days each year. A project demonstration/illustrated talk/speech is a requirement of every project completion. These project communication methods allow a 4-Her to develop public speaking skills and share the knowledge that they’ve learned in a project. Recently, participation has been low during these county events. 4-Hers may also be delivering project communications during club meetings, school events or through other community outlets. If a 4-H Volunteer is interested in chairing this event and working with the 4-H office to increase interest, please contact Nia Fields at 410-771-1761 or Nfields@ umd.edu. If there are 4-Hers that would be interested in signing up for a 4-H Demonstration day, please also contact Nia Fields at the 4-H office.
