Jeff Myers joins the University of Maryland Extension (UME) as the area extension director of Baltimore, Carroll and Harford counties. Jeff is responsible for the operations of the UME Extension and management of the faculty and staff in the three county “cluster.” Jeff’s bachelor’s degree is from the University of Maryland in agricultural and extension education. His employment with UME has included working as a 4-H Educator in Baltimore County, serving as part of the state 4-H faculty working in 4-H agricultural programs and as the director for the Maryland 4-H Foundation. He served 10 years as the county extension director for Penn State University in York County, leading a staff of 22. After completing a master’s degree from Michigan State University in animal science, Jeff returned to his family’s dairy farm, owning and managing Del-Myr Farm, a registered Holstein operation. Jeff also holds a certification from iPEC (Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching) as a life coach. GrowGrow 4-H Grow! Let’s our 4-H Program The 4-H program is a great way for youth to gain life skills that will prepare them to be successful adults. Youth learn a variety of skills including leadership, science, citizenship and healthy living. We want to reach at least 2,000 young people ages 5-18 with 4-H in 2012 through clubs, afterschool programs, school enrichment programs, camp, special interest and individual study. We challenge each club and 4-H program to increase their reach in 2012! The club with the highest increase in enrollment in 2012 will be recognized in a future county newsletter. For promotional ideas, please contact Nia Fields at Nfields@umd.edu. Thanks to all of our 4-H families, volunteers and sponsors who made fair week a success. It was wonderful to see some new and expanded programs, including the very popular and successful AgroLand and first time entries from our afterschool and school partners! This was a great opportunity to educate the public about agriculture and where their food comes from. It was wonderful to see the fair and AgroLand showcased on the WJZ news and in the Baltimore Sun. Check it the clip here: http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2012/07/13/4-h-fair-in-baltimore-county-aims-to-teach-kids-about-rural-life/ I am always impressed with the exhibits entered from our 4-Hers. We saw projects ranging from educational displays to science experiments to tasty baked goods. Many 4-Hers also showcased the animals that they have worked with during the year as well. A special thank you goes to the Baltimore County Fair Board and Volunteers for meting year round to plan this one-week event. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to plan the fair, set up the fair and take down the fair! Our volunteers also organized a successful cake auction, bingo game and livestock sale to support the fair. I also want to thank our 4-H Member Fair Tour guides for leading over 800 children through our fair and educating them on each exhibit area and animal species as well as the many possibilities within 4-H. Finally, I would like to thank members of the Baltimore County Teen Council who participated in many months of leadership development and planning to provide the Youth Activity Corner for our 4-Hers, child care tours and the public. Each year we follow the 4-H motto to make our best better! I understand the value of the 4-H program and have seen firsthand the positive impact it has on a young person’s life. I also see how it can directly lead to the success of an adult in their post high school endeavors. Let’s continue to grow the 4-H program so that all young people in Baltimore County can have an opportunity to experience 4-H, whether in school, a club, afterschool program, camp or during our county and state fair! With the continued support of our volunteers, partners and youth- we can make that happen! As a leading youth development organization, we need to continue to build and develop our leadership capacity as Educators and Volunteers. Ongoing training helps us accomplish this. Please be reminded that the Club Leader/Volunteer training will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2012, at the Baltimore County Ag Center/4-H Office, 1114 Shawan Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030. The training will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will cover various club and volunteer policies, new and important changed to IRS filing, financial guidelines, the 4-H enrollment system, marketing, programming opportunities and future County 4-H goals. At least one adult representative from each club is expected to attend this training. All interested volunteers are also welcome. In order for us to plan accordingly, please call the office at 410-771-1761 to R.S.V.P. by September 14, 2012. Again, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for your participation and continued support of the 4-H program. I look forward to an exciting and growing Baltimore County 4-H program and County Fair in the years to come! Check out our fair pictures on Facebook and inside your newsletter!
