We have created a series of Ag and Animal Science based workshops for 4-H and non (future) 4-Hers.We encourage you to participate in these opportunities and to spread the word.These will be ideal experiences for 4-Hers to add to their record books and animal person of the year nomination forms! All classes will be from 1pm – 4pm.The next sessions are: March 9, 2014 Animal Anatomy and Reproduction This class will include information about genetics, choosing sires, reproductive anatomy, and A.I. breeding. We will be dissecting an animal. This class is better suited to intermediate and senior members. Registration is required by February 21st to ensure we have enough materials for all participants. April 12, 2014 Soil Science Participants will discover soil as a natural resource, what are its properties and how it used in agriculture. Each of the above categories includes four age groups: Clovers: 5-7 Junior: 8-10 Intermediate: 11-13 Senior: 14-18 Ages are as of January 1st of the current year. 3. Time Limits: Clover Show and Tell: 1-3 min. and Clover/Junior 4-H Pledge: 1-2 mins. Prepared: Juniors: 3 to 5 minutes, Intermediates and Seniors: 4 to 6 minutes; Extemporaneous: Juniors and Intermediates: 2 to 3 minutes, Seniors: 3 to 5 minutes; Radio Spot: 30 seconds for Juniors, Intermediates and Seniors. Interpretations: Juniors - 1 ½ to 3 minutes, Intermediates - 2 to 4 minutes, Seniors - 3 to 5 minutes; Judges may deduct points for presentations not meeting or exceeding time limits. 4.Visual aids, including posters, are not permitted. Appropriate gestures are encouraged. For Dramatic Interpretation, contestant may opt to sit for presentation. Podium use is optional. 5. Prepared Speech contestants may speak on any topic. It may be wise to discuss topics that could be considered controversial with your 4-H leader or educator before the contest. The speech may be written for a specific audience, such as a 4-H club, PTA, or a Rotary Club. Note cards containing a key word outline are permitted. Only juniors may use a complete script. Memorization is not encouraged. 6. Extemporaneous speakers will draw three topics and choose one topic to speak on. Juniors and Intermediates may have up to 30 minutes and Seniors up to 15 minutes to prepare their talk. Contestants may use one side of up to four, or both sides of up to two, 5 x 8 inch note cards to their key word outline. Extemporaneous speakers will be shown color time cards at correctly timed intervals indicating “30 SECONDS”, “1 MINUTE” AND “STOP”. Prepared Speech, Extemporaneous Speech and Interpretations contestants should not introduce themselves as part of their presentation. This will be done by an MC or room Host/Hostess. 8. Radio spots should be exactly 30 seconds in length and may include a musical or sound effect introduction and/or background, but may not include a spoken introduction or “tag” by anyone other than the contestant. If music or a sound effect is used, the contestant must provide and operate the soundmaking device. The contestant will provide a complete written script (including notations about music/sound effects) to the timekeeper to aid in timing accuracy. Musical/sound effect introductions and endings are considered a part of the radio spot and must not cause the 30 second time limit to be exceeded. The spot should relate to 4-H, be original and be created by the contestant. 9. Interpretations: Interpretations are to be memorized oral interpretation or a selection of narrative in language of speaker’s choice. Interpretations consist of three categories: Dramatic Interpretation a. Oral interpretation, memorized by the speaker or a serious selection of narrative or dramatic literature. Monologues are acceptable. b. Mime – use your body to create an interpretation c. Poetry Interpretation – a memorized oral interpretation by the speaker. d. Humorous Interpretation – a memorized oral interpretation of a humorous selection by the speaker. Cuttings may be taken from published plays or prose. 10. Judges may ask questions of contestants in the prepared, extemporaneous and interpretations categories related to the topic. Due to time constraints, questioning should be limited to two or three minutes per speaker. Questions will not be asked in the radio spot category. 11. Clover Show and Tell participants are ages 5-7 and have the opportunity to share any special toy, collectible or other favorite item with the audience. Clovers will have 1-3 min to showcase their special item followed by a question answer period with the audience. 12. Clover/Junior Pledge Clovers ages 5-7 and Juniors ages 8-10 will recite the 4-H pledge to the audience. MARYLAND 4-H PUBLIC SPEAKING CONTEST RULES Other Rules: 1. Contestants are to bring two (2) copies of the script including reference. Language other than spoken English must be translated. 2. Speaker can speak or interpret in language of their choice. If using language other than spoken English, participant must inform Extension Office before the event to ensure appropriate judges. 4. At the State Contest, a contestant may only compete in one category. If a contestant wins more than one category at the County Contest, they must choose which category to compete in at the State Contest. State Champions may not enter the same category and age group a second time. 3. The champions from the county contest will be sent to the State Contest that is held in April. UME TRACTOR SAFETY TRAINING FOR YOUTH/ADULTS The University of Maryland Extension 4-H staff is planning a weekend training, FridaySunday, April 15-17, to provide certification for youth/adults wanting to work on a farm.Youth must be 14 years and older to take this training. Location for this year’s training is at the Baltimore County Ag Center at 1114 Shawan Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030. The weekend training will cost $30. The registration fee and application will be due to the Baltimore County Extension office by March 20. You may use posters or charts, plus items you are working with. B. Junior Division- at least 5 minutes, but not more than 10 minutes 6. If giving a food demonstration, food samples are not to be given to judges. You may offer them a copy of the recipe. C. Intermediate and Senior Divisions: at least 10 minutes but not more that 15 minutes. 8. Each participant is responsible for clearing the area after his or her talk. 4. Visual Presentation (Illustrated Talk) is structured with an introduction, body and summary. Instead of showing how to do, you explain how by the use of illustrations, charts or posters. You usually do this kind of talk in an area where you cannot actually show “how to do something.” 7. Each participant will furnish his or her own equipment and supplies. 9. Clovers will be evaluated, but not judged. They will receive a special ribbon and a premium of $1.00. 10. Blue ribbon winners will represent Baltimore County at the state contest held at the Maryland State Fair. Remember this is a great chance to give a demonstration for one of your projects. A demonstration is required for a project to be complete. Fair Demonstrations will ONLY include Animal related projects. Baltimore County 4-H Fair Timonium Fair Grounds July 10 - 12, 2014 Celebrating 50 Years of 4-H Events, Competitions, and Family Fun! cc The 2014 County 4-H Fair Advertisement Booklet! An Advertisement Booklet will be distributed to 4-H families and to the public through local businesses. A list of businesses advertising through the Ad Booklet will be identified on the Fair’s online website. If they provide an url address, the Fair’s website will direct viewers to their home page. The Fair Board is planning some special events and activities to celebrate the Fair’s 50th Anniversary. The best way you can help cover these costs as well as the Fair’s costs of insurance, security, ribbons, advertising, etc., is to support this Booklet. Consider placing a business, organization, farm, family or Club ad showcasing members and interests. Contact local farms, businesses, organizations and community groups – ask them to advertise in this year’s 50th Anniversary Advertisement Booklet. The Final Deadline for Submitting Ads is April 5th. If you have questions, please contact Carolyn Sellman at 410-655-0042 or casellman@verizon.net. 3 Summer Camp Opportunities with 4-H KIDS 8-13 • JUNE 23 – JUNE 27, 2014 New Using Sumo Robots campers will program their robot to push an opponent off of a 30” circular arena. All necessary code for effective functioning of the sumo will be provided. Robotics Camp There will be opportunities for team building, friendships, technical skill building and just plain fun. All campers we meet: June 23-27 from 8:30 – 4:30. The camp is located at the Baltimore County Ag Center at 1114 Shawan Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030. The cost is $100 for each camper. Farm Camp Farm Camp This camp is limited to 20 youth registered on a first come first serve basis. 4-H Time Machine Summer Day Camp And the Technology and Leadership Camp is for ages 12 – 13. Campers in this program will learn about environmental stewardship, leadership, and technology. Projects include photography/filmmaking, team building, and many others. Our Clover Camp is open to all youth ages 5 – 7. In clover camp campers will enjoy arts and crafts projects, nature hikes, and games while building new friendships and skills. The Junior/Intermediate Day Camp is for ages 8 -11. Campers in the day camp program will enjoy nature studies, science, engineering, and technology projects, arts and crafts, and games while building new friendships. Projects will include rocketry, photography, team building and many more. Farm Camp Farm Camp A SUMMER DAY CAMP FOR YOUTH 8-12 YEARS OLD Farm Camp Farm Camp A wonderful adventure - Farm Camp sows the seeds of responsibility, respect, community and stewardship. You can expect your child to have a hands-on farm experience learning about planting and harvesting vegetables, bees Farm Camp and honey, eggs and chickens, bunnies and goats, feeding and caring for animals, farm equipment, and more. While there is a focus on farming, campers will also have a well-rounded camp experience participating in activities like arts and crafts, games, and nature exploration. For all campers we meet: July 21-25 from 8:30 – 4:30. July 21-24 is held at Oregon Ridge Park; July 25th will be a field trip. WINTER WORKSHOP DID YOU KNOW THEY WERE IN 4-H? Folk singer John Denver was once a 4-Her but most of us know him as a folk singer. He was also renowned environmentalist and humanitarian. Popcorn genius Orville Redenbacher started his life out on his family’s farm and as a 4-Her. He graduated college with a degree in Agronomy and worked in the local Farm Bureau as well as an Extension Agent before launching his popcorn business. Page 5 2013 ANNUAL UPDATE & 2014 PROGRAM GOALS INSPIRING LEADERS The Maryland 4-H Youth Development Program provides a supportive setting for youth to reach their fullest potential. Children learn beneficial cognitive and life skills through community-focused, research-based, experiential educational programs. Participation is open to all youth ages 5-18 who reside in Baltimore County. The Clover Program is open to ages 5-7 years and the 4-H Program is targeted toward 8-18 year old participants. 4-H has an over 100 year tradition of voluntary action through strong public-private partnerships at federal, state and community levels.
