opportunity to explore new ideas
with our 4-H club projects and
activities. This roundtable is an
opportunity for leaders,
volunteers, and parents to come
together and share/swap ideas
about a variety of topics.
Discussion points will include
opportunities for youth (service,
leadership, and project-specific),
activity ideas, and multi-club
opportunities, as well as topics
brought by participants. Come
share your club’s strengths and
struggles, so that we can work
together to make the best better
for our 4-H program. Light
refreshments will be served.
To register for the training or
discussion, please email
jparrish@umd.edu or call our
office at 301-724-3320.

House (across from the pool).

that can be gifted during the holiday season – or entered
in the 2016 fair! It will also give parents extra time to do
some holiday preparations!
The event is free to 4-H members. Non-members will
be charged $3 to cover the cost of supplies. Registration
is required by December 4 with name and age. Please
email jparrish@umd.edu or call 301-724-3320.

4-H VOLUNTEER FORUM
November 20 to 22, 2015
Ocean City, MD
This is a wonderful time to visit the resort
area, where the pace is slower, there is
less traffic and parking problems are
almost non-existent. The event always
provides time to meet other
4-H families and learn more about all the
wonders of the 4-H program. Workshops offer a wide variety
of topics for teens and adult volunteers to share knowledge
and skills. This year we are excited to offer two
internationally recognized TeamPlay and Leadership
Trainers! Join us for the perfect mix of fun, fellowship and
learning.
There are six class tracks offered: AGsploration, Camping,
Partnerships, Focusing on Youth, Re-energizing Volunteers
and Training on 4-H Fundamentals. Dr. Jim Cain and ClareMarie Hannon will also be sharing through games and
hands-on fun - teamwork/leadership development/creative
problem solving/trust building. Dr. Cain’s train-the-trainer
programs are legendary and his conference keynotes/
playnotes are active, engaging and tremendously fun. Both
Jim and Clare are former 4-Hers, 4-H Camp Directors and
lifelong trainers!
The Carousel Resort Hotel is our destination for the
weekend. This Ocean City landmark offers an indoor ice rink,
swimming pool, and family friendly accommodations. The
Forum has reserved a block of rooms for early bird
registrants at an excellent rate of just $69/room per night
(plus taxes). Most rooms have two double beds and feature a
microwave and mini-refrigerator. Call the Carousel directly at
1-800-641-0011 to reserve your room and be sure to
mention the MD 4-H Volunteer Association for the special
rate. Ocean front rooms and condos are also available
for a slightly higher rate. A family weekend in OC doesn’t get
any more affordable!
The registration fee is $125.00. Registrations online at
www.extension.umd.edu/4-h/volunteers by October 30th; or
visit your County Extension 4-H Office for a paper
copy. Don’t delay, register today! Scholarships are available
for Allegany County 4-H members and registered volunteers.

An annual newspaper to be written and designed by 4-H members

and diverse 4-H projects. 4-H members will write stories, editorials,
testimonials, columns and/or take pictures and layout the paper.
The Maryland 4-H Foundation and the Delmarva Farmer advertising
staff will sell the advertisements to support our work.
What is the format of stories to be included?
 News Story–this is an article about an event/happening/experience/
person written in the 3rd point of view. About 500 words. Example: a
reporter interviewing the state 4-H communications winner and then
writing the story about the contest and the winner.
 Editorial—the newspaper’s opinion on a topic or issue, supported
with facts. Example: 4-H members opinion on the power of 4-H on
youth
 Column-a story told from the first person point of view. Example: My
experience traveling to National 4-H Congress

Uncooked wagon wheel macaroni
Small bowl and spoon
Wax paper
Baking sheet
Glitter (optional)
Fishing line, string or ribbon (to hang your ornament)
Instructions:
1. In a small bowl combine ½ cup of macaroni, ¼ cup of white paint
and 2 Tablespoons of glue. Mix until the macaroni is well covered
(this amount will make 2 good sized ornaments)
2. Cut a square of wax paper and place it on a baking sheet. Arrange
your macaroni into a snowflake shape on the wax paper, make
sure all the macaroni is touching each other.
3. If you have any glitter you can lightly sprinkle it on top of the
snowflake.
 Let snowflakes dry overnight, 24 hours is best. Gently peal off the
wax paper and tie on a string for hanging.
SIPPING SNOWMAN
You will need: Marshmallows
Straws
Mini chocolate chips
White icing
1. Slide your first marshmallow onto the straw from
the bottom-up (you'll get marshmallow on the straw
as you slide it up so better to keep that end in your
hot chocolate!)
2. Keep sliding marshmallows up your straw, as many as you'd like.
3. Put a dab of white icing in the places you'd like your snowman's
