National Farmers Market Week August 4th-10th
Farmers markets are an integral part of the urban/farm (and increasingly, urban/uban farm) linkage and have continued to rise in popularity, mostly due to the growing consumer interest in obtaining fresh products directly from the farm. As of
National Farmers Market Week, (the first full week in August), there were 7,864 farmers markets listed in USDA's
National Farmers Market Directory - a 9.6% increase from 2011. Read the Farmers Market Proclamation here .

Prince George's Farm Camp Helps Students Grow Healthy Eating
Habits
"Twelve high school students stood in a makeshift kitchen at a one-acre farm in
Edmonston, preparing a dish they might have eaten hundreds of times before - pizza.
But this time it was going to taste a little different - fresher, they said. On a recent day, students in the Seed to Feed program prepared the Italian dish at Eco City Farms , an urban farm and food education nonprofit organization. They used organic ingredients, some of which were taken from a two-acre plot." Read the Washington Post article here .

Southern Prince George's Farmers Grow Market Together
"The farmers that market together thrive together" could be a motto for a collective of southern Prince George's County farmers. Their farmers markets continue to grow after a refocused effort on increasing variety and customers. Upper
Marlboro-based Montpelier Farms , which sells produce such as corn and strawberries, is more well-known for its fall festival and corn maze, but it has something else that's distinctive - a farmers market." Read the Gazette article here .
Prince George's Joins National Movement to Create Healthy Communities
The Place Matters Policy Team of the Port Towns Community Health Partnership (PTCHP) applauds the Prince George's
County Council endorsement of a Food Equity Council. A resolution passed on July 9th notes the legislative body
"expressly supports and endorses the formation of the Prince George's County Food Equity Council" to develop and support policies and practices for improving the County's food system.
"Across the country and in our backyard, food policy councils like this Food Equity Council are bringing together government, community, non-profit, business, and other leaders to think creatively about how to address hunger, health, the environment, and the local economy through increased availability of healthy, affordable and fresh food," explains
David Harrington, Senior Advisor to the PTCHP, a program funded by Kaiser Permanente of the Mid-Atlantic States. Read the full release here .

Rent-A-Chicken
"I am not alone in imagining chickens in my backyard. Backyard flocks are on the upswing in suburban and urban
America, Chesapeake Country included. Why, the state's capital allows city-dwellers to raise them. I'd appreciate their weeding skills to keep the violets, dandelions, and chickweed in check and to work compost into the soil where I'd like to install new garden beds. Most of all, I'd like just-laid eggs, firm with bright orange yolks. I can dream, of course. But am I really up for raising a flock of chickens?" Read the full article from Bay Weekly here .

C&E Farm: Glenn Dale, MD
Although C.C. and Emma Dudley grew up on farms in North Carolina, they didn't buy their 15-acre farm until 1995, after their seven children were grown. Previously a Christmas tree farm, and located next to to bike- and walking-friendly
Washington, Baltimore & Annapolis Trail , the Dudleys began offering "Pick Your Own" greens and firewood for sale to the public in 1996. They broadened their crop selection each succeeding year, including a wide range of vegetables, herbs, cut flowers and some ethnic varieties, such as amaranth ( aka callaloo), perilla ( aka shiso), and sweet potato leaves. All of their produce is organically grown without the use of synthetic chemicals; they use compost, manure and rotational plantings to enrich and promote soil health.
Hayrides, petting zoo, moon bounce, face painting, and pumpkins are all part of their
Harvest Fest experience, held every October. The farm is open to the general public every Saturday during the month, and by appointment for groups during the week
(Monday thru Friday). School, homeschoolers, and seniors' groups are welcome for farm tours. Please contact them through their website .
You can find C&E's products every Saturday at the new Glenn Dale Farmers Market .
