What's Happening at Farmers Markets this Month?
Cheverly:
The Cheverly Community Market was voted #1 in the state of Maryland and #16 in
the United States, in the 2013 American Farmland Trust "I Love My Farmers'
Market" contest! Kudos to them!

MedStar Hospital Center Farmers Market: NEW!
This new market, located at MedStar Hospital in Clinton, will run every Wednesday
from 12pm-4pm, September 25th-November 20th. Local fruit, vegetables,
livestock products, baked goods and wine. Open to the general public!
Suitland:
The Suitland Farmers Market will be hosting an Octoberfest Celebration on
Tuesday, October 1st, 12pm- 5pm. They will have special vendors, activities and
workshops geared to entertain and enlighten the Suitland community:




a healthy cooking demo (and samples) from Chef Gail of United Healthcare
AmeriGroup with their Zumba bus and health tips
educational workshops from UMD Extension Master Gardeners

One-Day Herbal Medicine &
Body Care Class
October 6th, 12:00pm-5:00pm
Waldorf, MD
This FREE class will be a hands on,
tincture making, medicinal oil, tea
formulas, herbal salves, and more.
Each student will leave with their
own tincture, salve, tea formula, and
oil, an incredible beginning to an
herbal medicine kit. Lunch is
potluck style, please bring
something to share as well as your
own mug for tea and water bottle.
Please plan to arrive at class at least
15 minutes early in order to get
grounded and start on time. Call

Herbal Soap-Making Class
October 19th, 4:00pm-7:00pm

Have you ever admired the soaps at
the farmers market or crafters fair
and wondered how to make such
beautiful creations? Well wonder no
more, join us at Centro Ashé for an
afternoon exploring herbal soap
making with Joey Pascarella of
LOCAL NEWS.
A Step in a Healthier Direction
Menu labels are good move, but more is needed to address county health. Prince
George's County Councilman Eric Olson's plan to improve public health by
requiring chain restaurants to provide calorie and salt content information on menus
is a step in the right direction - but it's a tiny effort in a much larger problem. Read

FUN.
ECO City Farms Food Day
Visit the farm on Saturday, October 26th, 1pm-4pm, to
experience where food comes from and meet people who are
active in the local food movement. There will be music food,
farm tours, games and facepainting for kids, and our famous
smoothie bike - where you can pedal your way to a delicious drink. Community
organizations will also be in attendance. You'll also get the chance to meet our
resident ducks and our farm cat, Rosie. Come spend a beautiful fall day celebrating

Miller Farms Fall Activities
In October Miller Farms will have scenic hayrides every weekend, a pumpkin patch,
corn maze, a straw jumping pit and straw walking maze. They are also taking
appointments for school groups during the week.

Queen Anne Farm Fall Activities
Queen Anne Farm in Mitchellville offers hayrides
every weekend in October, a pumpkin patch, farm
animals, an assortment of mums and fall fruits
and vegetables. Fun for the entire family! School
groups are also welcome through the end of
October. Contact the farm for details.
Romano Winery
Our county's award-winning winery will be all over the area in October. Try their
Chambourcin (Silver Medal at MD Governor's Cup), Chardonnay and Liberty
(Bronze Medals at Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition)!

Slippery Slope Farm. This practical
hands on class will include learning
some of the healing qualities of
herbs before we get down and dirty
and make several batches of
soap. Each participant will bring
soap home with them from the
class! This is a great class to take
before the holiday season and will
give you all the skills you need to
make soap for yourself, or as gifts
for family and friends!

Mushrooms: Food and Medicine
October 27th, 10:00am-4:00pm
Bryan's Road, MD
Join mushroom enthusiast Holli
Elliott at Centro Ashé Farm for a
day exploring the medicinal and
edible uses of mushrooms. You will
focus your time learning the ins and
outs of mushrooms, structure,
habitat, uses, and then spend the
practical portion on cultivation.
Participants will learn how to grow
reishi mushrooms using log
inoculation and the class will utilize
woodblocks to inoculate shiitake

Small Farm Conference
November 8th-9th
Princess Anne, MD
The purpose of this two-day
educational conference is to provide
a venue for farmers, landowners and
supporters of agriculture to come
together to network and learn about
new opportunities and strategies that
promote farm profitability and
sustainability.

Agriculture, Farm Business &
Marketing, New & Beginning
