In each year, while you are on placement, you will also get the opportunity to put into practice your learning from other modules. Students follow a comprehensive careers management programme and are supported in their work placement search by Business School staff. Ultimate responsibility for sourcing and securing the work placement rests with you. Companies may advertise their placements or you may need to make a speculative application. WHEN DO I DO MY PLACEMENT? In year 1 your placement will need to be completed between April and midAugust. In year 2 your placement can be carried out anytime up to mid-August. In year 3 your consultancy project will be carried out in the Autumn term. WHAT COMPANIES CAN I DO MY PLACEMENT WITH? In year 1 placements should be carried out within third sector organisations. In year 2 and 3 placements and consultancy projects can be taken with any public, private or third sector organisation. HOW DO I GET MY PLACEMENT APPROVED? HOW MUCH DO I GET PAID? Due to the placements being short-term it is unlikely that your placement will be paid, however this is dependent on the company. If you undertake your placement in Cornwall you will receive up to £100 in travel expenses. CAN MY PART-TIME JOB BE MY PLACEMENT? ELEMENTS OF THE BSc BUSINESS PROGRAMME HOW LONG DO PLACEMENTS LAST? The minimum placement and project length is 70 hours. You can complete your placement over a condensed two weeks or spread out over a few weeks, which is to be agreed between you and the business. WHERE CAN I DO MY HOW LONG IS THE DO I HAVE TO COMPLETE A ‘BSC BUSINESS’ PROGRAMME? Three years incorporating your placements and consultancy project. PLACEMENT? Yes, the placements and consultancy project are requirements of core modules in each year of study. BE HOW WILL I WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T SECURE A PLACEMENT? ASSESSED? PLACEMENTS? You will need to have your placement approved by an Employability Adviser or the Programme Director before you will be allowed to progress. You will need to complete an online form which will include placement information and a risk assessment. You will not receive academic credit for the placement unless the form has been completed in full and has been approved by the module team. It is important that all placements are deemed ‘graduate’ level in order for you to gain useful experience in the future. Low level part-time jobs will not be approved. You can complete your placement within: The UK and the rest of the EU North America Australasia India China and Hong Kong Japan Singapore Other countries will be considered on a case by case basis. If you don’t secure a placement by the given deadline date you will be in danger of not being able to successfully complete the module. Assessment currently comprises: Reflective learning papers Career portfolio Presentation Project/consultancy report for client You will be allocated an academic tutor to support you during your final year consultancy project. 9 10 University of Exeter Business School www.business-school.exeter.ac.uk PLACEMENT MODULES ON THE BSc BUSINESS PROGRAMME “The BSc Business programme on the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus is unique from any other Business degree in the market. It allows students to gain a more practical approach to business, undertaking various placements as part of the three year degree programme. This module will run in the Spring term of year 1. It will enable you to present your learning and yourself in the best possible light to attract employers’ interest. BUSINESS PRACTICE AND ANALYSIS This introductory module to Business Practice will focus on the third sectors. It will explain how in a mixed economy this sector plays a vital role in innovation and service delivery, while at the same time enabling you to gain experience in fields you might not have traditionally considered for future employment. The insight and learning gained through this module will prove highly valuable to you as you progress throughout your undergraduate and post-graduation careers. This module will run in the second year. The aim of the module is to allow you to link theory and practice in a work-based situation. You will have the opportunity to understand more clearly how a charity, business or third sector organisation operates, and become involved in the day-to-day management of a particular project. Unique to all Business School students is the Your Employability Skills (YES!) module. There are 14 interactive lessons in this online module, covering a range of employability skills from what job would suit me?, researching careers, writing your CV, right through to interviews, assessment centres, professionalism in the workplace and creating digital profiles on social media websites. Each lesson has been specifically tailored toward Business School students. These lessons are non-credit bearing extra-curricular activities. However, each lesson has a quiz at the end and if you score 80% or above it will be recorded as a completed employability activity on your University of Exeter Exeter Award profile. Jess Barber BA BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT WITH MARKETING WITH INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE BUSINESS PRACTICE You will also have the opportunity to reflect on your own learning. This in turn should give you the confidence in your own workplace skills and a clearer idea of your strengths and weaknesses to better equip you for full-time employment. It will also help provide you with experiences that you can articulate at the job interview stage. PLACEMENT: THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY, FRANCHISE MARKETING INTERN GRADUATE POSITION: RECRUITMENT CONSULTANT, PAGEGROUP This module will run in the Autumn term of the final year. The aim of this module is to give you the opportunity to practice the skills you will learn in the Project Management Module in year two and to apply the learning you will assimilate through both the Business Practice modules undertaken in years 1 and 2. PRACTICE-BASED CONSULTANCY PROJECT Practice-based consultancy enables you to go into a business, charity or third sector organisation. You will work with the managers/owners in order to help them with a live project and supply them with an academically informed solution to a real and practice-based problem.
