Ag Expo and Fair
The 2013 Ag Expo and Fair countdown continues. Only 3 months until the fair fun begins! This year’s fair is
scheduled from July 20-27, 2013.
This month we would like for you to think….Animals! Animal Science Projects!
Animal Science projects include alpacas, rabbits, cavies, poultry, cats, dogs, cattle (beef and dairy), sheep,
goats, horses, and pigs. If you are thinking , “I would love to have one of these projects, but cannot raise
animals where I live”, there are other opportunities for animal science projects other than owning an animal.
Most animal science project animals can be leased from those who already own and raise the animal. If this
is not available you can also exhibit an animal science project in the Home Arts Building. You can do a
poster, display or presentation about the topic of your choice.
To show an animal science project at the Ag Expo and Fair, you will need to be
enrolled in the project by May 1st, complete the Animal Husbandry and Quality
Assurance for that species, make sure you own or lease the animal by the
ownership deadlines and/or tag the animal at the species weigh in dates.
If you would like to do a poster, display or presentation, you will need to decide
on a topic and create a display board about your topic.
To learn more about this opportunity, contact Shannon Uzelac at either
suzelac@umd.edu or 301-791-1404.
Horsemanship Standards Learning Day
While many kids kick back and relax on their Presidents Day break from school. Learning never stops for the
4-H Horse Project Members in Washington County. Presidents Day found these kids at the Western
Maryland Research and Education Center busily engaged in a series of workshops designed to provide handson learning of the knowledge needed for them to advance in the state’s Horsemanship Standards Recognition
Program.
“Classes this year focused on the more advanced concepts required for levels three and four”, explained 4-H
leader LeAnn Johnson. “We have worked hard to develop the resources needed to support this learning.”
Each participant received guidebooks for levels 1 through 4 depending on their current advancement.
Area volunteers Betsy Ayers, Donna Schmidt, Amanda Hall, LeAnn Johnson, and Cindy Lyons made this
activity happen as 4-H kids were taught workshops on: cause, transmission and symptoms of equine diseases,
vaccination regimes, taking equine vital signs, nutrition levels in forages and concentrates that make up the
equine ration, types of bits and their actions, skeletal anatomy and its effect on conformation, common
conformation faults, and the differences between blemishes and serious conditions that affect the soundness of
the horse.
In addition to an excellent cross section of learning activities, participants had an opportunity to get to know
each other in a fun environment and received door prizes and other participation goodies. If you have a horse
loving kid between the ages of 8 and 18, check out the 4-H Horse Clubs in Washington County by contacting
the local extension office at 301-791-1404. The only thing needed to participate is a love of horses and a
desire to learn more about them.

Volunteers Opportunities?!?!
For months now, volunteer
opportunities have been listed in each
edition of the 4-H Newsletter. Thank
you to those who have taken
advantage of these opportunities, but
perhaps it is not clear the benefit to
participating in these opportunities.
Each year club members are asked to
list VOLUNTEER activities in the 4-H
Record Book. Most clubs make a
point of scheduling volunteer
opportunities for club members to
participate in, but one way to set your
4-H Record Book apart during judging
may be to add MORE volunteer
experiences.
Each year club members are asked to
list COMMUNICATIONS completed for
their projects in the 4-H Record Book.
Many club members use their club
meetings as a venue for talks about
their projects, but one way to share
project knowledge and set your 4-H
Record Book apart during judging may
be to add MORE project
communications. Many of the
volunteer opportunities would make a
great place to share information about
your project.
