Know the accomplishments of these famous people from the 1920s and 1930s:
Louis Armstrong –singer and trumpeter that helped make jazz popular in the 1920’s.
Langston Hughes –famous poet during the Harlem Renaissance.
Duke Ellington – bandleader who played the piano and composed songs that are still performed today
Charles Lindbergh –first person to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean. This daring flight made him a
hero.
Babe Ruth – first baseball player to hit 60 homeruns in a season. Many consider him to be the greatest
baseball player of all time.
Jesse Owens – track star and hero of the 1930’s. He won 4 gold medals in the 1936 Olympics.
Margaret Mitchell –writer from Atlanta who wrote the novel Gone with the Wind. In 1939, it was made
into a popular movie.
Henry Ford – founded the Ford Motor Company. He used mass production to produce large numbers of
cars at cheaper prices.
Hebert Hoover - president when the Great Depression began in the late 1920’s. He believed that the
federal government should not play a big role in the economy.
Franklin Roosevelt –president during the Great Depression and went to work to give the American people
a “new deal.”

businesses going

8. What was the Jazz Age? The 1920’s was known as the Jazz Age because jazz music became
popular during that time.
9. What was the Harlem Renaissance? Harlem is a neighborhood in New York. The Harlem
Renaissance is a period when African American artists, poets, novelists, and musicians came
together in Harlem to share their ideas and art.
10. What is a Renaissance? A renaissance is a time when there is a new interest in art, literature,
music, and learning.
11. What were some causes of the Great Depression? 1. Stock market crash 2. Bank failures 3.
Unemployment 4. Too much debt
12. What caused the Dust Bowl? Where was the Dust Bowl? The Dust Bowl was caused by a severe
drought on the Great Plains in the early 1930’s. So little rain fell that crops could not grow. High
winds carried dry topsoil into the air. The soil became a part of a huge dust storm that buried
farms and killed crops.
13. Name four of the features of the New Deal?
1. Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC) – its goal was to create jobs and protect the
natural environment; workers planted trees, cleared hiking trails, and other
conservation projects
2. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) – built dams on the Tennessee River
3. Works Progress Administration (WPA) – hired people to build streets, parks,
libraries, and schools
4. Social Security – provides money to people over the age of 65 and
helps those who have disabilities and are unable to work
14. How did women’s lives change during the 1920s?
They spent less time on household chores, went to college,
worked outside their homes, won the right to vote
