Calculus Task Back Chair
The ‘Calculus’ chair is the University of Exeter’s approved
workplace task chair. It has a high level of adjustability while
remaining easy to use to ensure it can be correctly set up for
the individual requirements of most staff. Broadstock, who
manufacture the chair, are an approved University supplier for
office furniture and budget holders are able to order from them
direct. The process to agree the suitability of this chair involved
a detailed review of options available against a clear
specification defined by the Safety team and a thorough
practical test of over 20 chairs by 40 employees from across
the University.
Staff with a disability or specific personal needs should contact
the Disability Advisor (Occupational Health) or Health and
Safety for professional advice and guidance.

Detailed Ordering Process
1. Agree the size of chair required (The Calculus task
back chair is appropriate for most staff except those
shorter than 1.53cm or 5ft and those with very
particular requirements. Please check with the safety
team if you need further advice)
2. Agree any additional requirements (these incur
additional costs as specified on the right and should
be approved by line management):
• Chrome base (Aesthetic upgrade for higher profile
offices and spaces)
• Height adjustable armrests that fold away when
not required (The Safety team suggest a chair
without armrests is better for the majority of staff as
it encourages better posture and allows the chair to
be positioned closer to the desk but armrests are
available if required for a particular reason. Please
check with the Safety team if you have any
concerns about whether armrests are appropriate
or not)
• Soft castors for hard floor finishes (The
standard casters are appropriate for all carpeted
surfaces)

Suggested chair fabrics
There are 2 main types of fabric for use on task chairs. The standard
choice is the Camira Xtreme range which is a modern crepe weave fabric
made from 100% recycled polyester, diverting waste from landfill and
saving virgin raw materials. It is highly durable and non-pilling making it
popular for task seating. The alternative is the Camira Blazer range which
is a pure new wool upholstery fabric with a felted finish. This is created
from 100% LaneveTM branded wool and its origin can be traced back to
the individual sheep farms in New Zealand.

The below colours offer smart but damage resistant options for the chair
fabric. If others colours are required to match existing furniture, Broadstock
