Becki Falwell and Liberty Director of Athletics Jeff Barber were also a part of the ceremony. The highlight of the pre-game ceremony was the announcement of naming rights of the field, which will now be called Kamphuis Field at Liberty Softball Stadium. The Lady Flames started by downing Louisiana Tech, 11-6, in eight innings. Kassidy McCoy went a career-best 4-for-4 with one homer and three runs scored. McCoy is the first Lady Flame with a four-hit game since Hanna Nichols on Feb. 15, 2014 against UMBC. The Lady Flames pulled away for a 9-2 win over Memphis on Saturday, led by a 3-for4 performance by Jaclyn Amader. Liberty’s 8-0 setback to No. 5/6 LSU on Saturday was the team’s fourth game against a nationally-ranked opponent this season. Big Comebacks Liberty trailed Lamar, 4-1, with one out in the bottom of the seventh, before rallying to tie the game, 4-4. The Lady Flames then won the game, 6-5, in the 10th inning with a walk-off squeeze bunt, as Kassidy McCoy drove in Sarah Robertson from third. Then, facing a 6-4 deficit to Louisiana Tech with two outs in the seventh on March 4, McCoy hit a game-tying home run. Then, Robertson’s two-run blast in the eighth sparked Liberty’s five-run spurt to an 11-6 win. Three’s a Crowd Liberty totaled a season-high 16 hits against Louisiana Tech last Friday, the team’s most hits since a 16-hit game in a 10-3 win over Winthrop, April 18, 2014. Also, Kassidy McCoy (4-for-4), Mickey Loveridge (3-for-4) and Alexia Taylor (3-for-6) had three or more hits each against Louisiana Tech. Liberty’s previously mentioned win over Winthrop was also the last time three Lady Flames had three hits in the same game, as Megan Robinson, Katie Zavodny and current Lady Flame Katie Han had three hits apiece. So far this season, Liberty has gotten three-hit games from seven different players, in Taylor (2), McCoy, Jaclyn Amader, Han, Mickey Loveridge, Rylee Reynolds and Tori Zavodny. Lucky Number 11 Julia DiMartino tossed a career-high 11 strikeouts in an 11-0 shutout win over Grambling Feb. 26, as the Lady Flames tied a season high with 11 runs scored. DiMartino’s 11 strikeouts were the most by a Lady Flame in a single game since Katrina Johnson struck out 11 batters against Presbyterian, April 30, 2011. Her 11 strikeouts were the most by a Liberty freshman pitcher since Ali Thompson’s 12-K game against Hampton, March 31, 2001. Early Trends Liberty is 6-0 so far this season when totaling 10 or more hits in a game, and 2-11 when failing to reach double-digits in hits. The team has gone 6-1 when scoring five or more runs, and 2-10 when scoring three runs or less. The Lady Flames have not lost a game when leading after the third, fourth, fifth or sixth innings this season. Liberty’s best inning has been the seventh, where the Lady Flames have outscored opponents, 19-1. Shutting the Door Liberty has tossed three shutouts this season, including a no-hitter by Julia DiMartino versus Stetson and combined shutouts against North Texas and Grambling. The Lady Flames have posted 10 shutouts, dating to the start of the 2015 season. Fire Away Liberty averages 5.77 strikeouts per seven innings. Julia DiMartino averages a teambest 6.49 strikeouts per game, followed by Chase Cassady (6.47) and Chandler Ball (4.61). Ball picked up her 40th career victory, Feb. 27 against Lamar. She is ranked seventh in program history in both career victories (41) and career strikeouts (365). One-Liner Tori Zavodny is ranked sixth in the nation with three triples so far this season. 2016 Miscellaneous Stats MULTIPLE HIT GAMES 2 3 4 5+Tot 24Jaclyn Amader 42 - -6 22Alexia Taylor 51 - -6 44Rylee Reynolds 41 - -5 1 Sarah Robertson 3 - - - 3 23 Kassidy McCoy 1 - 1 - 2 8 Katie Han 11 - -2 7 Mickey Loveridge 1 1 - - 2 10 Tori Zavodny 1 1 - - 2 14 Deidra See 2 - - - 2 15 Kaitlin McFarland 1 - - - 1 TEAM 23 7 1 - 31 MULTIPLE RBI GAMES2 3 4 5+Tot 23 Kassidy McCoy 3 - - - 3 22Alexia Taylor 11 - -2 8 Katie Han 2 - - - 2 44 Rylee Reynolds 2 - - - 2 1 Sarah Robertson 2 - - - 2 24 Jaclyn Amader 1 - - - 1 7 Mickey Loveridge 1 - - - 1 14 Deidra See 1 - - - 1 TEAM 13 1 - - 14 HITTING STREAKS Longest Current 22 Alexia Taylor 6 2 24 Jaclyn Amader 6 44 Rylee Reynolds 6 1 Sarah Robertson 6 7 Mickey Loveridge 5 5 23 Kassidy McCoy 4 10 Tori Zavodny 4 8 Katie Han 3 14 Deidra See 2 2 Cassie Gingerich 2 9 Taylor Mabry 1 1 15 Kaitlin McFarland 1 1 11 Blair Lawrence 1 BIG INNINGS (4+ runs) vs. Morgan State (2/13) vs. Grambling (2/26) vs. Louisiana Tech (3/4) vs. Memphis (3/5) R 8 5 5 5 Inn. 7th 7th 7th 6th SHUTOUT WINS Score Hits All. vs. Stetson (2/13) 8-0 (5) 0 vs. North Texas (2/19) 1-0 3 vs. Grambling (2/26) 11-0 1 Youth Abounds Liberty started five freshmen during its season opener at UCF, the most freshmen to start the first game of the season since six Lady Flames freshmen started Feb. 15, 2002. Liberty’s freshman opening-day starters included: Chase Cassady (P), Rylee Reynolds (2B), Sarah Robertson (SS), Jaclyn Amader (CF) and Kaitlin McFarland (DP). Nine freshmen and five sophomores have made at least one start this season. Big Improvement The Lady Flames posted a 29-30 record last year, after going 11-46 in 2014. It was the biggest improvement from 2014 to 2015 among all Division I softball teams. The largest turnaround in Liberty’s Division I history was 19 wins, from 2005 (22-32) to 2006 (41-23). (DiMarti)No-No Freshman Julia DiMartino tossed the 15th no-hitter in the program’s NCAA Division I history, during an 8-0 win over Stetson on Feb. 13. DiMartino and catcher Alexia Taylor are the first Liberty battery to complete a no-hitter since Tiffani Smith tossed a no-hitter to Keely McMillon at Winthrop, May 13, 2011. DiMartino is just the second Liberty freshman to pitch a no-hitter, joining Leslie Inge (1997). Pitching, Big Inning Lead Lady Flames to First Win Chase Cassady threw a four-hitter, striking out a season-high nine batters, as Liberty downed Morgan State, 11-1, on Feb. 13 for the team’s first win. Liberty erupted for an eight-run seventh inning against the Bears, its most runs scored in a single inning since an eight-run fourth inning versus Houston Baptist, Feb. 7, 2015. Strength in the Circle Liberty’s returning pitchers combined for 26 wins and six shutouts last season. Chandler Ball, a 2015 Big South All-Conference second team pitcher, went 20-11 with a 3.20 ERA and four shutouts. Kenzie Friesen won six games, posting a 3.98 ERA while also fashioning two shutouts. She tossed a two-hit shutout against Presbyterian on April 3. Home Run Notables Madison Kotchey is the lone Lady Flame to hit a collegiate grand slam. Kotchey’s grand slam narrowed the Lady Flames’ deficit to 7-4 during an elimination game against Coastal Carolina in the 2015 Big South Softball Championship. Kotchey was the first Liberty freshman since J’Nae Jefferson in 2007 to hit a grand slam. Kassidy McCoy hit a career-high two homers at Charleston Southern on April 12, 2015, making her the only current Lady Flame to hit two homers in a game. Welcome Freshmen This year, the Lady Flames have 12 freshmen on their softball roster. It marks the largest freshman class in program history. Prior to this season, the largest freshman class was in 1996, when 11 freshmen appeared on the roster. Stacy Radulovich, a three-time Big South All-Conference first team selection, was named 1996 Big South Rookie of the Year, while 1996 freshmen Katie Phillips and Libi Cook both earned two all-conference awards. Family Matters Freshman pitcher Chase Cassady, a two-time all-state pitcher from Orlando, Fla., is the younger sister of current Liberty assistant coach Paige Cassady. Their father, John Cassady, is on staff as a volunteer assistant coach. Freshman pitcher Julia DiMartino was the 2014 Gatorade New York State Player of the Year. Her older sister, Alyssa DiMartino, pitched for the Lady Flames from 2011-14, serving as Liberty’s opening-game starter in both 2012 and 2014. Sophomore outfielder Tori Zavodny, a 2015 VaSID All-State second team selection, is the younger sister of Katie Zavodny, who was a 2013 NFCA All-Region outfielder and holds Liberty’s records for career and single-season stolen bases. Sophomore Madi Clarke’s father, David Clarke, played baseball at Liberty from 19861989. In fact, David Clarke played his home games at Worthington Stadium, the same site where Liberty Softball Stadium now sits. 2016 Liberty Softball When ... at Home.............................................. 0-0 on Road.............................................. 1-3 at a neutral site................................... 7-8 Conference......................................... 0-0 Non-conference................................ 8-11 In Day Games.................................... 7-8 In Night Games.................................. 1-3 Midweek Games (M-Th)..................... 0-1 Weekend Games (F-Su)................... 8-10 Liberty starter pitches 5+ inn.............. 6-3 Liberty starter pitches < 5 inn............. 2-8 Liberty staff strikes out 10+.....................
