No. 4 seed UNC Asheville BULLDOGS
(19-11, 12-6 Big South)
Buies Creek, N.C. - Gore Arena - 2 p.m.
The Game
With a first round bye in the 2016 Big South Men’s Basketball Championship, the No.
5 seed Liberty men’s basketball team squares off with No. 4 seed UNC Asheville, Friday
at 2 p.m. The contest will air live on ESPN3. The Flames are looking to advance in postseason play for the first time since the 2012-13 season, when Liberty won four straight
tournament games to capture the 2013 Big South Championship. Standing in their way
is an Asheville squad that already owns a pair of wins over the Flames in 2015-16. The
Bulldogs most recently defeated Liberty on Feb. 25, 73-56, marking the highest scoring
margin (17) in a conference loss for Liberty, this season. The Flames are also looking to
snap a nine-game skid in the all-time series against Asheville. Friday’s winner will advance to the semifinals on Saturday at 1 p.m., which will broadcast live on ESPN3.
McKay Voted Big South Coach of the Year
After leading the Flames to a top five seed in the 2016 Big South Championship, Liberty men’s basketball head coach Ritchie McKay has been voted the Big South Coach of
the Year by the league’s head coaches and media panel.
Along with McKay, redshirt sophomore guard John Dawson earned all-conference
honorable mention. Redshirt sophomore guard/forward Ryan Kemrite rounded out Liberty’s honorees, receiving a spot on the conference’s all-academic team.
Matchup Notes
- The Flames are making their 25th appearance in the conference tournament. Liberty
holds a 21-21 (.500) record all-time in the Big South Championship, with five finals appearances and three titles (1994, 2004 and 2013).
- Liberty has been the outright No. 5 seed on just two other occasions. Coincidentally, the
No. 5 seeded Flames squared off with No. 4 seed UNC Asheville in the quarterfinals of
the 2000 Big South Championship, dropping the contest, 77-66 (March 2, 2000). The last
time the Flames held the fifth seed, the matchup took place in Asheville’s Kimmel Arena.
Liberty fell to Charleston Southern in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Big South Championship, 88-74 (Feb. 29, 2012).
- This postseason marks the second straight year the Flames and Bulldogs have met
in the conference championship. Liberty and Asheville met in the Big South Championship four straight years (1998-2001). The Bulldogs won three of those meetings, but the
Flames took the final one, eliminating No. 3 seed Asheville from the 2001 Big South
Championship, 60-48 (March 1, 2001). No. 6 seed Liberty fell to No. 2 seed Winthrop the
following day in double overtime in the semifinals, 67-62.

Notes and Anecdotes
- With 43 steals on the year, Lovell Cabbil is climbing closer to etching his name on the
program’s freshman steals list. Ed Gomes (1974) and Liberty Hall of Famer Mark Chafin
(1975) hold the record with 59, followed by Larry Blair with 53. Three other players each
had 48 steals in their freshman year – Seth Curry (2009), Kenny Gunn (1982) and Mickey
Baker (1974).
- The Flames are looking to snap a nine-game losing skid to UNC Asheville. Liberty’s
last win against the Bulldogs was on Jan. 27, 2011. On that day, the Flames’ John Brown
connected on a buzzer-beating layup to defeat UNC Asheville, 83-81, in overtime.
- Prior to coming to Liberty, redshirt sophomore John Dawson spent a season and a half
at Marquette before transferring midway through the 2014-15 season. Dawson missed
the first 11 contests of this season but is now averaging 13.6 ppg in 18 contests. Conversely, former Asheville guard Andrew Rowsey, who led the Bulldogs in scoring last
year (19.2 ppg, third in the Big South), transferred to Marquette at the conclusion of the
2014-15 campaign.
- In Liberty’s nine Big South wins, the Flames are averaging 69.8 ppg, while holding teams
to 65.1 ppg (+4.7). Conversely, Liberty has averaged 62.4 ppg in its conference losses,
compared to 69.9 ppg for its opponents (-7.5). In terms of rebounding defense, the Flames
are allowing over five less boards per game in Big South wins (30.2 rpg). Liberty is sharing the ball better in its wins, averaging 14.6 helpers per game versus 11.1 in defeats.
The Flames are hitting 11.2 three-pointers per contest in league victories, while they have
knocked down 8.1 per game in losses.

Liberty Inks 5 for 2016-17
Liberty Men’s Basketball Head Coach Ritchie McKay has announced the signing of
five players to attend Liberty during the 2016-17 academic year – Josiah Talbert, Brock
Gardner, Xzavier Barmore, Hayden Koval and Brody Hicks.
“When we were at Liberty the first time, we had a class that ended up being highly
acclaimed,” McKay said. “And although that class achieved much, this is as excited as I
have ever been about a recruiting class in their overall fit for our university, their playing
ability and their character as a whole.”
A three-year varsity player at Olathe East High School in Olathe, Kan., Talbert
earned all-conference honors in 2015. The 6-9 forward averaged 11.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 blocks as a junior, leading Olathe East to the 2015 state semifinals and
a third-place finish. In addition to playing under coaches Jim Super and Joe Mundweiler
at Olathe East, Talbert was also a member of the KC Run GMC summer travel team,
one of the top AAU programs in the nation. His brother, Ezra, is currently a redshirt
freshman with the Flames.
An ESPN three-star recruit, Gardner plays for coaches James and Paul Brown at
Tri-City Christian Academy in Chandler, Ariz. As a junior, the 6-7 guard averaged 25.8
points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals, 2.1 blocks and 4.3 assists was named CAA Arizona
State Player of the Year three straight seasons (2013-15). Gardner also led Tri-City
to the state championship in 2013 and 2014 and was named state tournament MVP.
Gardner currently has 1,735 career points, 653 rebounds, 103 blocks with a 62 shooting
percentage from the field. In addition to his high school accomplishments, Gardner also
played for the Arizona Warriors summer travel team and Coach Curtis Ekmark.
Barmore is a 6-1 point guard who currently plays for Seneca High School in Seneca,
S.C. While under the tutelage of head coach Kevin Padgett, he earned all-state honors
and was an all-area selection three straight seasons (2013-15). Barmore averaged 25.9
points, 5.8 assists, 4.0 rebounds, 4.3 steals and shot 41 percent from three-point range
during his junior year and holds the school record for most points in a single game (51).
In addition to his high school accomplishments, he also played summer travel AAU for
the highly successful, faith-based program Upward Stars in South Carolina.
Koval is a 7-0 center who currently plays for head coach Rob Davis at CHANT
Homeschool in Prosper, Texas. He earned all-regional homeschool honors in 2015,
all-tournament honors for the National Homeschool Tournament twice (2014-15) and alltournament for the Texas Homeschool State Tournament three straight seasons (201315).
Hicks is a 6-3 guard who currently plays for head coach Jacob Gruse at Cave
Spring High School in Roanoke, Va. In 2015, Hicks earned first team all-state, first team
all-region, first team all-conference and was named the Conference 32 Player of the
Year. He averaged 15.4 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists during his junior season. In
addition to his high school accomplishments, Hicks played summer AAU basketball with
Spectrum Sports Academy coached by Ron Clary.
Veteran Leader
Redshirt senior transfer Anthony Fields is Liberty’s lone senior. After receiving his
degree from Bradley, Fields was eligible to play immediately for the Flames.
During his time at Bradley, Fields played in 44 games, making his first career start
on Jan. 31 against Indiana State, last season. Fields concluded the contest with a
career-high 11 points in 34 minutes. Three days later, the Detroit, Mich., native suffered
a season-ending knee injury.
Fields transferred to Bradley from Wake Forest, where he competed in 24 games as
a true freshman. During his lone season with the Demon Deacons, he earned All-ACC
academic honors.
A graduate of Quality Education Academy in Winston Salem, N.C., Fields helped
lead his team to back-to-back NCSAA Division I national championships, capped by a
26-4 record in 2010-11. Prior to signing with Wake Forest, Fields received offers from
Boston College, Oklahoma, Seton Hall and Wright State.

Bradley Connection
While redshirt senior Anthony Fields spent three seasons at Bradley as a player, Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay is also familiar with the Braves program. McKay served as
an assistant coach at Bradley during the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons.
Hot Hand for Homesley
In Liberty’s game against Western Michigan on Nov. 27, Caleb Homesley set a then
career high with 11 tallies, surpassing his previous personal best of six with a trio of threepointers before the game’s first media timeout. Homesley knocked down a trio of threepointers in a 58-second span, hitting the third trey with 15:40 left in the first period.
Last Time Around at Liberty
Prior to his days in Charlottesville, McKay served two seasons as Liberty’s men’s basketball coach, posting a 39-28 overall record and a 19-13 mark in Big South play. He was
named the seventh head coach in program history on March 26, 2007.
Following a 16-16 record during his first year at Liberty, McKay led the Flames to a
23-12 record in 2008-09. The win total matched the program’s NCAA Division I record for
most wins in a season (Liberty finished the 1996-97 season with a 23-9 overall record).
Liberty finished the 2008-09 season third in the Big South standings, the Flames’ third
double-digit win total in league play in the last 10 seasons (Liberty was 10-8 in 2009-10
and 13-5 in 2010-11).
The Flames were invited to play in the inaugural CollegInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT), advancing to the second round following a win over Rider.
McKay led one of the top scoring offenses in the Big South and ranked No. 48 in the
nation, averaging 75.5 points per game during the 2008-09 season.
Under McKay’s leadership, forward Anthony Smith (2006-09) finished his career
ranked sixth in program history with 1,754 career points scored. Smith was named All-Big
South first team in 2009, one of two first-team all-conference student-athletes coached by
McKay (Alex McLean in 2008).
McKay brought Seth Curry to Liberty and the rookie made an immediate impact on
the program. He finished the year averaging 20.2 points per game and was named 2009
Big South Freshman of the Year (second player in program history to receive the honor).
Curry spotlighted McKay’s Top 50 recruiting class in 2008, which was ranked No. 48 in the
country by Basketball Times.
Familiar Faces
Rounding out Ritchie McKay’s staff are three assistant coaches who all bring previous
Liberty coaching expereience back to the program.
Kyle Getter is no stranger to Liberty basketball after serving on McKay’s staff during
the 2008-09 season, helping guide the Flames to a 23-12 record and an appearance in the
CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). Most recently, Getter was a member
of Mike Jones’ staff at Radford, helping the Highlanders finish 22-12 overall and 12-6 in
the Big South last season. Radford made an appearance in the 2015 College Basketball
Invitational, defeating Delaware State, 78-57, before falling to Vermont, 71-58.
Omar Mance has been a member of the Flames’ coaching staff the last two seasons,
working primarily with Liberty’s wing players while also handling various scouting assignments and recruiting responsibilities. Prior to coming to Liberty, Mance spent three seasons as an assistant at Army under head coach Zach Spiker.
Brad Soucie has the distinction of serving as an assistant under Ritchie McKay every
day of his head coaching career. The partnership began in 1995 when the two helped resurrect the program at Portland State, which had been dormant for 15 years. He followed
McKay to Colorado State and Oregon State and New Mexico, before joining McKay in his
first stint with the Flames (2007-09).

2015-16 Notes/Highlights
- Made his 2015-16 debut after missing the first 22 games due to a stress fracture in his right
foot. After Gardner-Webb briefly claimed the lead in the closing minutes of the first half, the
sophomore guard swished a three-pointer to put Liberty back on top, 25-24, with 4:05 left in the
period. The Flames did not lose the lead following Hoffman’s basket.
