university of exeter November 2008 Community Liaison Officer Rory Cunningham, has been appointed by the University as its new Community Liaison Officer. “My job is to help build positive relationships with local residents and community groups and ensure strong lines of communication exist between the University and the wider community. The creation of StreetWise is just one of many new and positive ways for the University to keep in touch with Exeter’s communities and vice-versa. If you are concerned about anything relating to the University or our students we hope you will let us know. I have set up a StreetWise Helpline to be used by any resident who wishes to contact me with any thoughts, news, feedback and concerns they might have about living with students in the community. I understand that noise, rubbish and parking are often the key issues that arise and the StreetWise Helpline will help me get a better picture of how and why such issues may be occurring. However, this number is not just for logging complaints. It is also a number that you can ring to highlight good news, improvements in local areas or to suggest ideas for future projects. If recording a message out of hours please speak clearly. I will always aim to provide a quick response. I look forward to meeting you over the coming term.” Email: streetwise@exeter.ac.uk StreetWise Helpline: 01392 264686 University connects with residents The University of Exeter is investing in extra services to help strengthen the relationship between students and other city residents. This is being led by the appointment of a new Community Liaison Officer (see panel left). As Vice-Chancellor and the President of the Students’ Guild we want to make sure that the University is doing everything in its power to be a good neighbour and that we educate students about their responsibilities and tackle problems as soon as they arise. We are being actively supported in this by Devon and Cornwall Police and Exeter City Council. There are around 12,000 University students living in the City, including over 2,000 from overseas. Students can have a very positive influence on the communities in which they live but we know that sometimes their lifestyle clashes with that of other residents. The University plans to invest very significantly in Exeter over the next few years to help us become one of the very best universities in the UK and a leading global institution. Given the current economic climate, this will be very good news for the City and should help to protect and create jobs at a time when other organisations may be cutting spending. As part of this we hope to build additional student residences on campus so more students have an alternative to living in private rented houses. We are also looking at ways of encouraging students to become active citizens – to take part, to engage with their neighbours and to vote in their city. Students already raise upwards of £80,000 for local charities and give 100,000 hours of their time to voluntary organisations in the City. But we think we can do more. This information sheet gives you some key information about the people you can now contact to sort out any problems you may encounter. We will be producing a newsletter three times a year to alert you to new community initiatives, key dates and new services. The magnets will indicate refuse delivery times for certain areas. Contact: For missed bin collections, or to request additional bins, call ECC’s Cleansing Services on 01392 665010. Accumulations of rubbish likely to harbour or attract vermin can be dealt with by ECC’s Environmental Health team on 01392 265193. Parking All students who live in the City are advised that they will not be able to park cars on the campus and they are advised not to bring cars to the City. If students do bring cars and they park them in contravention of residents parking and waiting restriction offences (including yellow lines) they will be dealt with by ‘Civil Parking Enforcement Officers’ employed by the City Council. I look forward to working closely with colleagues such as PC Paul Willis, PCSO Sarah Giles, and also Rory Cunningham, the University’s Community Liaison Officer. I will keep you updated as to how I may be able to assist you as residents around the campus area.” PC Dalziel’s contact details are: Email: David.Dalziel@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk (excellent for slow-time contact) Tel: 08452 777444 (general switchboard number, ask for me by name) Address: Neighbourhood Team East, Thomas Glass House, Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, EX2 5DS The Community Warden Scheme Two University of Exeter students, Emilia Lawrenson and Victoria Murphy, have just been appointed as ‘Community Wardens’ in the St James area of Exeter. Community Wardens act as a point of contact for students living off campus, providing information and advice on a range of issues including refuse and recycling, community safety and security. The wardens work closely with the local police and regularly meet with the Community Liaison Officer to agree how to focus their work. Emilia and Victoria will shortly begin patrolling the St James area and will be taking time over the coming months to get to know students and local residents. We trust that the Community Warden Scheme will provide another way for students to engage as active citizens in the communities in which they live. This is a pilot initiative being organised with Devon and Cornwall Police. Following the pilot, we aim to employ further wardens in other areas of Exeter in the new year. New Student President John Cox is President of the Students’ Guild ’08-’09. “I’ve lived in Exeter for 8 years and some of you will be thankful to know that I wasn’t always a student, having worked at Sowton industrial estate and in some of the pubs in town. I know what it’s like to be a citizen of Exeter living amongst students. Presidents are elected from amongst current students to represent student interests and help create the right atmosphere of learning and development at the University. I also represent them locally and nationally, which is why you are reading this from me now! I hope you will get in touch with suggestions about how you would like students to get involved in the City. With your input I know we can make a difference.” Email: President@guild.ex.ac.uk Help us make less impact on the environment by receiving StreetWise via an email link to the University Website.
