Feedback
Dear Resident,
In this edition of the
StreetWise newsletter
we are happy to
announce the early
arrival of our new Student
Community Wardens.
Wardens cannot be contacted directly, but I can
forward relevant messages via the StreetWise
email and answerphone number.
I would also like to highlight that the StreetWise
answerphone number has changed from: 01392
264686 to 01392 726252.
These code changes have been necessary as the
University has changed telephone systems.
We apologise for any initial confusion and wish
to reassure residents that the old number will
be active for a short period during the transition
to the new number.
I would like to remind residents that the StreetWise
answerphone is not an emergency number, but a
way to record information that you would like to
bring to the University’s attention at any time.
I endeavour to respond to calls as soon as I can.
Feel free to contact me at any time on the
StreetWise number 01392 726252 or email:
streetwise@exeter.ac.uk
I look forward to hearing from you
Rory Cunningham
Community Liaison Officer
Transport Update
The University has unveiled new state-of-the art
bicycle facilities, aimed at encouraging staff and
students to cycle rather than drive. In all, there
will be more than 1,000 new cycle parking spaces.
The University has also worked in partnership
with Stagecoach and Devon Country Council
to extend the D Bus service. From 4 October,
the service will run until midnight from the
Streatham campus to the city six days a week,
operate every 15 minutes out of term time,
and extend its route to include Cowley Bridge.
Meet our Student
Community Wardens
In the last edition of the
StreetWise newsletter
we were glad to
announce that our new
Student Community
Wardens would begin
one month earlier this
year.
Our new Wardens will be
involved in a range of new
and existing projects over
the next academic year
– all helping to support
students living off campus.
Back row: Pip Earle, Alex Ratcliffe, Harry Moore. Middle row:
Sarah Hodges, Kiki Paddy-Okafor, James Gould. Front row: Sian
Grindley, Sophie Hainsworth, Hannah Foster, Will Hall
The Community Warden
project began two years ago, firstly as a pilot in the St James Ward of Exeter, leading to
ten Wardens working across St James, St Davids, Polsoe, Newtown and Pennsylvania.
Wardens conduct weekly ‘walkabouts’ in their ward area and provide information to
new student tenants. Wardens also deliver important campaign messages to students
and develop their own community projects, often in collaboration with local residents.
The first duty for our new student Wardens will be the delivery of the new Student
Community Guide – which will be distributed to all student households during the first
week of term. This guide is full of essential information for students living off-campus.
Student Community Wardens are always keen to discuss project ideas with residents
and they can advise residents who wish to apply for StreetWise funding to establish
their own community projects.
Messages can be sent to our Student Community Wardens by emailing Streetwise@
exeter.ac.uk (and adding your ward name in the subject box) or by calling 01392
726252.

The University of Exeter is launching its “Birds & Bees Campaign”
in partnership with Devon Wildlife Trust, Exeter Wild City, Ambios
and other community partners with a ‘Bioblitz’ from 1pm until
4pm on Saturday 9 of October.
The University of Exeter is one of the UK’s top Universities and is well
known for its stunning, landscaped campus. We are currently seeking to
improve the natural habitats on campus and create wildlife corridors that
will link up with other green spaces in the City of Exeter.
The Birds & Bees Campaign will bring students, staff and the public together on Streatham Campus
to find, identify and record as many species as possible. Wildlife presenter and naturalist Nick
Baker, a former University of Exeter student, will lead a team of experts to help to identify plants,
fungi, insects and other species. We hope this event will be informative as well as lots of fun for
participants of all ages!
Numbers are limited, so if you would like to participate, please contact Harriet Sjerp-Jones on
01392 726133 or email H.Sjerps-Jones@exeter.ac.uk. The event will begin at 1pm outside the
Jeffrey Pope Building (Streatham Campus). Contact Harriet if you require directions.
Please note that children under 14 years should be accompanied by an adult.
Staff Volunteers
Arrive in Newtown
Staff from the University’s Careers and Employment
team have recently collaborated with Newtown
Primary School through the ‘Community Challenge’
scheme.
The team liaised with Devon Wildlife Trust who
put them in touch with Caren Brooks, the Head
teacher at Newtown Primary School. Caren
needed help to redevelop a pond in the school
grounds during the Summer.
The Careers and Employment team (nicknamed
‘The Newtown Wranglers’) were managed
throughout the day by Cat Loudwill-Jones,
from Devon Wildlife Trust.
‘The Newtown Wranglers’ admire
their work.
“The work that the Exeter University volunteers completed will give a real
kick start to the plans that the Head teacher has for developing the pond
as a space for wildlife and learning.”
Paul Martin, Education Officer, Devon Wildlife Trust
This project was conducted as part of Exeter University’s ‘Community Challenge’
staff volunteering programme. If you are a member of a community group, or
residents association and you have a project that you think our staff could help with,
from conservation work to helping revamp a local community centre, all suggestions
are welcome.
