June 2014 Issue 22 Community Feedback Dear Resident, In this special edition of the StreetWise newsletter we have attached the 2014 Community Survey. The survey asks a range of questions about the community engagement activity the University and Students’ Guild have pursued with a range of other partners. We wish to build on the survey work carried out in 2011 to improve our understanding of the community issues that affect residents and better direct our time and resources in the coming years. Your opinion is extremely valuable to us and we hope you can take around 10 minutes to complete the attached survey. The deadline for responses is Monday 7 of July. An online version of the survey can be filled in directly here: www.exeter.ac.uk/surveys/ community For all other enquiries about the University or students living in the community, the StreetWise answerphone/email service is available for you. COMMUNITY SURVEY EDITION Good Deeds Day On Monday 24 February student volunteers from the University of Exeter took part in a national Good Deeds Day as part of National Student Volunteering Week. 54 students spread out across the city to help make a real and practical impact on their local community and meet some local residents too. Student Volunteers at Queen’s Crescent The volunteers helped with painting a playroom at Bonhay Road Community Centre, weeding and gardening the St Davids Church grounds, doing maintenance at the Exeter YMCA and working with YMCA residents to generally impact upon the area. The day was a huge success with students getting really stuck in and providing more than 324 volunteering hours in just six hours! “I spoke to the team of volunteers at Queen’s Crescent and thanked them for the work they were doing. I understand that well in excess of 60 hours of work were done in the garden in this one day, which is tremendous. In addition students were painting the St Sidwell’s community centre, a most valuable facility in the city.” Cllr Keith Owen City Councillor for the St James Ward Good Neighbour Awards I look forward to hearing from you Rory Cunningham, Community Liaison Officer StreetWise email service: streetwise@exeter.ac.uk StreetWise 24hr Answer phone: 01392 726252 Last Month the Students’ Guild asked students, community groups and resident associations for ‘Good Neighbour’ nominations. The nomination deadline has now passed, but we would like to thank all those who took time to nominate one of their neighbours. “I’m really pleased to be able to reward and recognise good neighbourly relations in the community and I feel this has been a great year for good citizenship.” Chris Rootkin Vice President Welfare & Community The winners will be announced in the September edition of the StreetWise newsletter. The scheme comprises a series of University-subsidised waste collections for students moving from private accommodation at the end of the academic year. Since the scheme began in 2009, we have expanded the project to collect re-usable items and food. We also offer to ‘caddy’ glass to bottle banks for students without vehicles. The scheme was initially developed because we observed that not all students left their premises on their last bin-day and the quantity of refuse at the end of the year can be significant. The scheme will also offer two large-scale ‘community clearup days’ for all residents in 10 streets in the St James Ward. Residents in participating streets will receive an information leaflet soon. If neighbours observe any large quantities of waste, please look for the ‘Students on The Move’ collection sticker that should have already earmarked the refuse for a collection. Unfortunately, the scheme can be mis-used by a small minority of landlords and builders. If you have any concerns about an address, email streetwise@exeter. ac.uk and we can check our pickup schedule. Exeter Green Drinks Every month people who work in the environmental field meet up for informal meetings known as Green Drinks. Exeter University’s Sustainability Manager, Karen Gallagher, is one of the coordinators for Exeter. Green Drinks provides a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different group, making Green Drinks an informal, self-organising network. These events are very simple and unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, and grown partnerships. Exeter Green Drinks occurs at the Imperial Pub (New North Rd) from 6.30pm until 9pm, on the third Wednesday of every month. If you decide to attend a meeting, look out for the Green Drinks sign on the table. Visit the website for the date of the next meeting in Exeter www.greendrinks.org ‘Love at the Lemmy’ This year has been a fantastic year for ‘Love at the Lemmy’, a welfare project run by the ECU every Saturday evening to provide students with sandwiches, water and a friendly presence outside the Lemon Grove nightclub. The project is now in its third year and has continued with its success following a boost in volunteer numbers. The positive atmosphere generated by ECU volunteers has helped to calm the flow of students leaving the Lemongrove Help us make less impact on the environment by receiving StreetWise via an email link to the University website. Please contact Rory Cunningham directly if you would like to receive this newsletter via email: tel. 01392 726252 or email: streetwise@exeter.ac.uk Rory would also like to hear your ideas for future articles and features! www.exeter.ac.uk before they make their way home. The prospect of a quick snack and friendly conversation also helps the volunteers to engage with students and support any who need assistance. Love at the Lemmy’s success and growing popularity has resulted in additional funds from the Students’ Guild and the University and the organisers are looking forward to supporting even more students in the future.
