September 2015 – Issue 26 Preparation for Freshers’ Week In this edition of the Streetwise newsletter, we wanted to emphasise our planning for the busy term one period. The Police will receive an extra boost in support from the Student Welcome Team volunteers, but much more emphasis has been placed on communicating clearly with students prior to their arrival in Exeter. We are also proud to be working more closely with licensed premises through our new affiliation with the Best Bar None (BBN) network. Our plan for term one is available to view online, alongside our general Community Engagement Plan. The detail can be viewed here: ex.ac.uk/term1plan Highlights include: • All new and returning students to receive a welcome email, emphasising the need to socialise safely and responsibly. • Increased work with the Best Bar None network to increase positive messages around responsible drinking. • Additional staff support for the Welcome Team – including two additional Estate Patrol vehicles. • Increased work with Landlords/private providers of purpose build accommodation to emphasise safety and conduct messages. • A new online ‘community newsletter’ for students living in private accommodation. The scheme has helped to build positive relationships between the licensed trade, police and local authorities, and is a great example of partnership working. The project brought together students, local residents, cllrs and local business to help makeover the gardens/frontages of Richmond Rd. This positive partnership was supported by the University’s ‘StreetWise’ fund, The Students’ Guild Green Unit and funding from Cllr Jill Owen. Crucially, the scheme has helped to develop a much clearer ‘template’ for instigating make-over schemes in other streets in the city. Christine Fraser, Chair of St David’s Neighbourhood Partnership, helped to design and instigate the scheme. ‘It has been a really delightful experience for residents working with our student neighbours and getting to know them. And the project has legs - it’s something we can roll out and continue, which is important. The icing on the cake for St David’s Neighbourhood Partnership is the University’s ‘Good Neighbour Award’. This came as a complete surprise and it will make a welcome contribution to the ‘green’ fund, particularly as we take St David’s into Britain in Bloom, with our students, in 2016.’ 60th Anniversary Celebrations The University of Exeter is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee in 2015-16. To mark our 60th anniversary a host of events, awards and activities are planned throughout the year, both in Exeter and around the world. Celebrations are aimed at staff, students and the local community and begin with the launch of a book written by Professor Jeremy Black entitled ‘City on the Hill’, which details the history of the University from its small beginnings in 1955 to the present day. Community events are planned throughout the Diamond Jubilee year for all to enjoy and we hope to involve as many people as possible in activities to commemorate our heritage as well as to celebrate our success with everyone that has supported the University over the years.
