Dimensions: 25'
Class: 3
Magnitude : 12.0
Observations:
C8 at 65x. It is near the
center of a triangle of 11m and
12m stars, with 10 min long
sides. It is very faint but
magnifies well and appears
uneven and splotchy.
C11 at 115x. It is framed
by a 10m-11m triangle of stars.
It has a small greenish disc.
With the O-III filter, it takes
on a granular appearance. At
339x with the O-III, it shows
an oval disc.

Other Names: The Great Hercules Cluster, M13
Astronomical Leage Program: Messier Club; Urban Deep Sky Club
Position: 1642+3628
Type : Gc
Dimensions: 23'
Class: 5
Magnitude : 5.7
Cluster population: 500,000
Notes:
It was discovered by Halley in 1714. Bevis also mentioned it in 1786. De Cheseaux
listed in his 1746 catalog but never observed it because he did not have its coordinates
and apparently could not locate it.
Messier added it to his list on Jun 1, 1764. He described it as a "nebula without star."
William Herschel was the first to resolve it into stars (1784).
It is 160 light years in diameter. If its stars were grains of sand, it would be 300 miles
in diameter and the sand grains would be 3 miles apart!
The brightest stars are red giants some 2,000 times brighter than the sun and shine at
11m (the Sun would be 19m at this distance). There are no blue giants in the cluster. On
the H-R diagram, the Main Sequence turn-off point falls a little over midway down the
Main Sequence (absolute magnitude +4.1), implying an age of around 10 billion years.
The total mass of M13 is something like 500,000 solar masses.
The brightest stars are 11.8m and the horizontal branch is 15.0m.
Observations:
C8 at 65x. Awesome! Resolved at low power, it takes high power very well. It looks
a little flat on the E side. Steve Coe mentions that three dark, thin lanes seem to trisect it
into unequal thirds, giving rise to a feature called "the propellor." In a letter to Astronomy
Magazine, Alister Ling, an amateur from Edmonton, Canada wrote, "The intersection of
the Y-shape in the dark lanes is oriented at the top of the [cluster]. I’ve found that
spotting these lanes requires at least a 6-inch telescope and 200x... In 1855, Lord Rosse
stated the lanes ‘do not join in the center, but to the southeast.’ Yet observers today often
mistakenly look for the dark lanes in the middle of the cluster and wonder why they can’t
find them." According to "The Backyard Astronomer" column in the June 1986
Astronomy, "These are not ‘holes’ in the cluster but rather perceptual effects of seeing
more bright stars at one place and less at another."
C11 at 98x. On a hazy night, it spanned over 1/3 of the fov. It was well-resolved all
across its face, and steadily gets denser toward the core. A wide pair of stars is 5 min W.
