The variability of the light was discovered by the German amateur astronomer J. H.
Fritsch in 1821.
Star A is a supergiant eclipsing binary and 180 times the diameter of the Sun! It is
also an infra-red source and a shell star.
The invisible partner defies imagination— it is 2,800 times the Sun's diameter
(making it larger than Saturn's orbit!) but only 1 billionth of the Sun's density, less dense
than a good laboratory vacuum. The orbit takes 27.06 years.
The most popular theory at present on the nature of the companion is that it is actually
a disk of debris surrounding a small and invisible star— perhaps the early stages of the
development of a new solar system? This disk is thought to be 10 AU across and 1 AU
thick, and has a measured temperature of 500o K.
Observations:
C8 at 206x.
Scale model (in which the Sun is the size of a baseball):
Diameter: A = 45 feet.
Separation: AB = 137 miles; AC = 144 miles.

Notes:
1907: 5.9 @ 83. 2 measurements. The separations look discordant. I checked the
DSS2 site and found the 1991 measure to be accurate (106 @ 84). The 1907 measure
comes closest to a infra-red source, IRAS 05183+4200, which in 2002 measured 10.8 @
74 (again, on the digitized sky survey using the Aladin utility at the CDS website).

curves." With a 13-inch Newtonian, Steve Coe describes a "dark lane down the middle."

Notes:
It was discovered by Le Gentil in 1749. Messier added it to his catalog on September
25, 1764. He said "this one is square and contains no nebulosity if one is careful to
examine it with a good telescope."
It is 25 light years in diameter and 290 million years old. The youngest stars are B4
and B5 types but the brightest star is a G0 giant 900 times brighter than the Sun.
It is part of the Auriga OB1 association.
This cluster lies 32,000 light years from the galactic center and 50 light years above
the galactic plane.
Observations:
C8 at 65x. Awesome! It has a sparse center. The eyepiece view suggests an inverted
Greek "pi". Note the bright star (8m) just above the center. Webb described it as a
"noble cluster arranged as oblique cross; pair of larger stars in each arm; brighter star in
centre…. Glorious neighbourhood." Very rich field.

Star A is an eclipsing binary (period of 3d 23h 2m 30s), a fact discovered by A.
Maury in 1890. It is an Algol-type system. This star is an infra-red source and is 3 times
larger than the Sun. The primary has 2.33 solar masses and the spectroscopic companion
2.25. The orbit is nearly circular.
- 36 -
Zone 87
The star belongs to the Ursa Major moving stream.
From James Kaler's Star Notes:
Menkalinan (Men-KAL-in-an) is an Arabic name meaning "the shoulder of the reinholder." As Polaris locates the north pole and Mintaka in Orion's Belt the celestial
equator, Menkalinan locates the "solstitial colure," the great circle in the sky that passes
through both celestial poles and the summer and winter solstices. Menkalinan is a mere
half-minute of arc (an angle less than the eye can see) off the colure. Immediately south
lies Theta Aurigae, which is even closer, a quarter of a minute away.
Menkalinan is a class A star with a temperature of 9,200 Kelvin, not very much
different from Vega or Sirius and somewhat brighter than a normal "A star" should be.
Careful observation reveals that every 3.96 days, the "star" undergoes a partial eclipse of
about a tenth of a magnitude, showing that it actually consists of two almost identical
stars in a tight orbit, each about 48 times more luminous than the Sun separated only
about one-fifth the distance between the Sun and Mercury. They may both be "subgiants"
that have begun to change and brighten as a result of exhaustion of their core hydrogen
fuel. They are so close that they distort each other through mutual tides, neither of them
round. A faint red dwarf far below naked-eye vision appears to orbit the pair at least 330
Earth-Sun distances away, from which the bright pair would be just barely separable by
eye.
