The distances suggest an optical system— A is measured by Hipparcos at 570 light
years, C at 103.
Observations:
C8 at 104x. A 10m star lies 60" W of star C.
C11 at 115x. If you include a bright field star at the north, this system forms a nice
little zig-zag. E was not confirmed.

The primary is an infra-red source.
There is a 14m companion at 28 @ 202. It was discovered by Barnard at Yerkes in
1898. It is a dwarf about 1/1000th the light of the Sun.
Both of the companions shown here are optical.
The small elliptical galaxy NGC 404 is in the same field, just to the NW of Beta.

From James Kaler's Star Notes:
Mirach is a cool red class M giant (the color difference notable to the eye), and quite a
bright giant at that. Mirach's name is something of a mistake. It was originally meant to
be "Mizar," meaning "loin," which for us today refers to the famed star in the Big
Dipper's handle, but a variety of misspellings made the name take on its present form.
As a giant it is truly luminous and large. Its temperature is 3,800 degrees Kelvin
(which tells how much invisible infrared is radiated). From temperature and luminosity,
as well as from the direct measure of angular diameter (a mere 0.012 seconds of arc), it is
0.8 Astronomical Units across, about the size of Mercury's orbit. It is difficult to say just
what state the star is in. It is clearly massive, having three of four times the mass of the
Sun, but it may have a core made of helium or one made of carbon.
Whatever the state, it will soon (in astronomical terms of course) die as a dense white
dwarf rather like the companion to Sirius. Mirach, like many cool class M giants, seems
to be slightly variable, though the variations are not well documented.
It also has a quite-marvelous companion, a very dim hydrogen fusing (like the Sun)
star of very low mass, and from the Earth only 14th magnitude, over 60,000 times fainter
than Mirach proper. At minimum, the two are 1,700 Astronomical Units apart, over 40
times Pluto's average distance from the Sun. From Mirach, the companion would shine
like a bright red Venus, whereas from the companion, Mirach would sear the sky 120
times more brightly than our full Moon.

Position: 0158+3741
Type : Oc
Dimensions: 50'
Class: II 2r
Cluster population: 70
Magnitude : 9.6
Notes:
It is 1.1 billion years old. Its earliest stars are A2 and F0 types, but the brightest stars
are G and K types, and 77 members are known. Its H-R diagram lies between a typical
open cluster and a typical globular cluster, and all its giants are metal poor. W. J. Luyten
has found a number of white dwarfs in this ancient cluster (the brightest being 19m).
The brightest star is 9.0m, a G7 giant some 40 times brighter than the Sun.
It lies 28,500 light years from the galactic center and 450 light years below the
galactic plane.
At its given distance, it must be about 17 light years in diameter.
