Notes:
It was known to the Persiansa Al-Sufi in 964, who described it in his The Book Of The
Fixed Stars.
Simon Marius first viewed it through it a telescope (December 15, 1612). He
described it as "a star, or sort of star with a most remarkable shape, completely different
from any other in the heavens... it shines with a whitish light which is emitted more
brightly at the center where there is a pale and blurred glow.... It somewhat resembles the
light of a burning candle, shining through translucent horn, when seen at night from afar."
Hevelius listed in in his 1690 catalog, as did Halley (1715). Flamsteed included it in
his 1729 list. John Bevis drew it on his Celestial Atlas in 1750. De Mairan mentions it in
a paper he wrote in 1733. It was also mentioned by Cassini (1740), De Cheseaux (1746),
and Bode (1779).
Messier noted it on August 3, 1764.
It is a member of the Local Group.
Edwin Hubble first found Cepheids in it in 1923, thus establishing the fact that these
"nebulae" were separate galaxies.
It has a mass of 400 billion suns and is over 180,000 light years in diameter; also it
has over 140 globular clusters. At its distance, sun-like stars would shine at 29.1m, far
too faint for even the new telescopes with CCD’s to detect.
The H-II region I mention in the observation notes is NGC 206, a large association
measuring some 2,900 by 1,400 light years. Several hundred stars in this cloud have
luminosities exceeding 10,000 suns.
The galaxy’s nucleus is only about 2" across (which translates to 50 light years at that
distance), and is packed with perhaps 10 million stars! This means the stars are only a
few hundred AU apart and are packed in at 60 or so per cubic light year. Can you
imagine what the night sky might look like from a planet orbiting one of those stars?
Observations:
C8 at 37x. Large and bright, the dust lanes were clearly seen. An awesome sight! It
runs NE-SW and on a night of good seeing I noted the H-II region in the SW end.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
It would be 37,000,000 miles in diameter!

Dimensions: 8' x 3'
Magnitude: 10.8

Notes:
Only 5,400 light years in diameter, it is part of the Local Group and was seen by
Messier in 1773, but not added to his catalog. (It was added to his catalog
posthumously.)
Observations:
C8 at 37x. It is a small oval patch about 15 min N of M31. It is elongated N-S and
takes high power very well. There is no real nucleus, just a gradual brightening to the
center. A faint star lies in the S end.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
It would be 1,700,000 miles in diameter.

Notes:
It was discovered by Le Gentil on October 29, 1749. He happened upon while
viewing M31 that night, as he describes: "I observed the Andromeda nebula with a fine
18-foot telescope [Note: focal length, not aperture!]... but while looking to the left outside
the telescope (field) I observed two small telescopic stars. To the left of the star... I saw
another small nebula, about one minute in diameter... I was in some doubt as to whether it
- 32 -
Zone 82
might not be only a comet and in this uncertainty I obtained the configuration with regard
to the two, small neighboring stars... I was not able to observe it again until 8th
November... when I observed the phenomenon which I had seen nine days previously,
precisely in the same place and at the same distance from the nearby stars. I had no more
doubt about it being a nebula."
Messier entered it on his list August 3, 1764, although he had seen it as early as 1757.
The Earl of Rosse supposedly resolved it. It is a member of the Local Group and is
only 2,400 light years in diameter,
Its center harbors a 3-million solar mass black hole, as discovered by the Hubble
Space Telescope in 1992.
Observations:
C8 at 37x. It is a very bright N-S oval about 15 min S of M31 with a starlike core.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
It would be 700,000 miles x 470,000 miles.
