Mechain found it on September 5, 1780; Messier added it to his list on October 21. This is the faintest Messier object. It is 1 light year in diameter. The central star (16.5m) has a surface temperature of 60,000 Kelvin. - 33 - Zone 59 Before the advent of modern planetary nebula theory, astronomers considered NGC 650-1 to be an oddball among planetaries; but if planetaries are, in fact, tubes of ejecta, not spheres, we can reconcile what we see as being a glimpse slightly off the axis of the tube. Observations: C8 at 83x. It has two lobes and is easy. The SW lobe is brighter, and takes high power well. At very high powers, and in good seeing, it resembles a bow tie. Steve Coe reports that he noticed a dark lane down the center at 104x with a 13", but my 8" does not show anything like this. However, owing to the fact that this object has two NGC numbers, I am certain Steve most certainly did see the lane or gap. Phi Per (4.1m, B2V, 700 times brighter than the Sun and 620 light years away) is 54 min to the SSE. Phi is rotating at an incredibly high rate— 450 kps, which means it has thrown off a growing shell of ejecta. It is also a spectroscopic binary (imagine life on a hypothetical planet orbiting that star!). It is a member of the Cas-Tau OB1 Association.
