NGC 147
Other Names: UGC 326
Astronomical League Program: Caldwell Club
Rating: 3 M
Position: 0033+4830
Type : Gal
Surface brightness: 14.7
Class: E4 (dwf)
Dimensions: 7' x 4'
Magnitude : 11.5
PA: 25
Notes:
Only 4,400 light years in diameter, it is a companion of M31.
Observations:
C8 at 65x. Faint. The flanking stars are hard on the seeing. There is a "C" shaped
chain of very faint stars to the N. The axis runs NE-SW. At 104x, it takes on a mottled
look. Rich field.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
It would be 1.4 x 0.8 million miles in size.

NGC 185
Rating: 4 D
Other Names: UGC 396, H II 707
Astronomical League Program: Caldwell Club, Herschel 400 Club
Position: 0039+4820
Type : Gal
Surface brightness: 14.7
Class: E3 pec
Dimensions: 9' x 7'
Magnitude : 10.0
PA: 35
Notes:
Only 9,700 light years in diameter, it is a companion to M31, lying some 250,000
light years from M31.
Although the weak emission lines in this object formally place it in the category of
Seyferts, it is probable that this galaxy does not contain a genuine active nucleus.
Instead, its emission lines may be powered by stellar processes. NGC 185 is one of the
companions of M31, and it is morphologically classified as a dwarf spheroidal galaxy,
one with a diffuse center lacking a clear nucleus.
Large numbers of RR Lyrae stars have been discovered by Saha and Hoessel (1990)
with a mean magnitude of = 25.0. Planetary nebulae have also been identified Ford,
Jacoby, and Jenner 1977). At least three globular clusters have be identified.

Observations:
C8 at 206x. Large and faint; look for a dark area near the center. (Use high power.)
There may be a very faint star superimposed. The axis runs NE-SW.
C11 at 115x. Faint glow, about 4 min x 5 min in size.

NGC 278
Other Names: UGC 528, H I 159
Astronomical League Program: Herschel 400 Club
Rating: 4 D
Position: 0052+4733
Type : Gal
Surface brightness: 12.8
Class: SAB(rs)b
Dimensions: 1'
Magnitude : 11.6
Notes:
The exact distance determination for NGC 278 is a problem, since the small radial
velocity is not meaningful for that. We use the mean value of the discordant distance
values from Tully (14.74 Mpc) and Bottinelli et al. (32.65 Mpc).
Observations:
C8 at 104x. A starlike nucleus and faint halo; use medium powers. A 10m star lies
on the N side. Rich field.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
It would be 7 million miles in diameter.
Distance (LY): 77,000,000
Radial velocity (km/sec): +622
