It was discovered by William Herschel on November 4, 1788 (H II.768). NGC 1569 is a galaxy which is probably situated close to the Local Group, and has been considered as a member galaxy by Arp (1986), together with its neighbor in the sky, NGC 1560. Today, however, most authors take them as neighboring non-members (e.g., van den Bergh 1994); Kraan-Korteweg and Tammann (1979) suggest they might be members of the Maffei 1 - IC 342 group. As both galaxies lie approximately in the direction of the neighboring Maffei 1 and the M81 groups, their role in the Local - Maffei 1 Group dynamics might be interesting. Local Group candidate UGCA 92 is a close neighbor of this galaxy, which may indicate a physical relationship of some kind. [http://www.seds.org/~spider/spider/LG/n1569.html] Observations: C8 at 104x.
