It is 2 light years in diameter. The central star (13m) is 1/15 as bright as the Sun, is only 2% its diameter, and has a surface temperature of 100,000o K. It was once thought to be a shell of gas, but we now believe that planetary nebulae are actually tubes of gas we see edge-on. Recent observations at the New Technology Telescope in La Silla, Chile show that the inner "edge" of the shell is studded with opaque globules of matter (similar to Bok’s Globules in appearance, but certainly not composition) that seem to be in the process of being blown outward by the fast stellar wind that planetaries eject after a phase in which they eject a slower wind. (One theory for these globules is that the progenitor star may have actually shed clumps of mass during its high-wind stage.) Surprisingly, all the Herschels missed it with their large telescopes!
