Mechain first noted it in May 1781; Messier added it to his copy of Connaissance des Temps in 1784, and later astronomers added it to his original catalog. William Herschel was probably the first to see the dark lane that bisects its face. It is the most massive of all the Messier objects (weighing in at 1.3 trillion suns), and the most luminous. The bright disk is 82,000 light years in diameter, but the faint arms probably extend out to 130,000 light years diameter or more. This galaxy was the first one in which Vesto Sliper (of Lowell Observatory) measured a red shift, a phenomenon that at the time was not understood; it was not until 1923 when Edwin Hubble proposed that the universe was expanding and that the galaxies were individual "island universes" that Slipher's work was recognized for the discovery that it was. (Remember that at this time, the galaxies were thought to be NGC 4594 (M104, The Sombrero) part of the Milky Way, and when Slipher Galaxy (Sa) announced a red shift suggesting a velocity Observed with C8 on 5/20/95 of 700 miles per second– a velocity unheard Magnification: 104x of in those days!– he suggested that maybe these patches of foggy light were extragalactic.)
