Cluster population: 130
Magnitude: 5.8
Notes:
It was discovered by Messier on February 19, 1771 (although he mis-recorded its
declination by 4o).
It is 300 million years old. It is also 20 light years in diameter. The brightest star is
8.2m (120 times brighter than the Sun).
This cluster lies 29,000 light years from the galactic center and 550 light years above
the galactic plane.
Observations:
C8 at 83x. Very bright and large, it is scattered over a lot of sky. It contains many
doubles and a nice equilateral triangle. Eight stars lie in a N-S line near the center.
William Schart (Killeen, TX, C8) says, "This cluster is shaped like an arrowhead pointing
to the east."
14x70 Binos. Large, spread out; difficult in the turbulent skies.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):

averted vision, all I could see was a stellar nucleus! Two 12m stars lie 3 min W.
