It also rotates at a dizzying 265 kps. - 14 - Zone 208 Cepheids are a type of pulsating variable star named after the prototype, Delta Cep (3.6 - 4.3m in 5.4 days). Their size may change as much as 10% per cycle, and their temperature varies with their size. About 700 are known in our Galaxy, plus several thousand in nearby ones. They typically have luminosities in the 10,000 Suns range and periods that range from 1 to 50 days. The longer the period, the higher the luminosity. Cepheids are sub-divided into several classes. The classical Cepheids are brighter than all others, and are often referred to as Type I Cepheids. They are young, massive stars and found in the spiral arms of galaxies. They average 5 to 10 days per period. Type II Cepheids tend to be older stars located mostly in the galactic centers and halos and globular clusters. Their periods average 12 to 30 days in length, and they are metal poor. A further sub-class of Type II Cepheids are the W Virginis stars. They are distinguished by being of a little different mass and chemistry than normal Type II Cepheids. All Cepheids show much greater magnitude fluctuations in blue light than in red light. But if it is a cluster, the HR diagram’s turnoff point suggests an age of 708 million years. The age of an open cluster can often be closely estimated by examining an HR diagram of the entire cluster and looking for where the stars are leaving the Main Sequence. Here is a diagram for a typical open cluster: (This diagram is taken from the web site http://www.missioncollege.org/depts/astro/Book/Astro% 20Stars.pdf, May 6, 2006.) - 28 - Zone 208 For a young open cluster, the stars will all lie on the Main Sequence diagonal. But as the larger stars in the cluster mature, they begin to migrate off the Main Sequence and become Red Giants. The point at which the turnoff occurs tells astronomers what size stars are currently evolving into Red Giants. Given that we have a fairly good understanding of stellar evolution and how it depends on mass, it is a straightforward (if complex) procedure to determine the time when all the stars of the cluster were on the Main Sequence (and hence, how old the cluster is). This technique works for open clusters as well as for globulars. Observations: C8 at 104x. Delicate and beautiful, averted vision is a big help. It is framed by a large triangle of 9m stars.
