Position: 2134-0049
Type: Gc
Dimensions: 13'
Class: 2
Magnitude: 6.5
Cluster population: 100,000
Notes:
Jean-Dominique Maraldi probably discovered it on Sept. 11, 1746, for he described
what could be taken as M2 in this precise position. He went on to write what would end
up being decades ahead of his time: "It is not surrounded by a single star even to quite a
large distance: none can be seen in the whole field of the telescope. This seems very
singular to me for most of the stars which are called 'nebulous' are surrounded by a large
number of stars, so much so that the whiteness senn there is, in fact, the light of a mass of
stars too small to be seen in the largest telescopes, if my judgment is correct."
John Bode included it in his list of 1777.
Johann Koehler observed it and included it in his list of 1779.
Messier observed it on Sept. 11, 1760 and correctly likened it to M22, another large
globular cluster.
Lord Rosse saw a dark area near the core.
It is 150 light years in diameter. The brightest stars are 13.1m and the horizontal
branch is 16.1m.
Observations:
C8 at 206x. Large, bright and resolved, it takes medium powers very well. An 11m
star is 2 min N, and a 10m one is 5 min NNW. Next to M13, it is probably the best
globular in the northern skies.
C11 at 98x. Semi-resolved and very dense, it very rapidly brightens to the center.
Class: 2.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
Its diameter would be 60.860 miles.
Distance (LY): 50,000
Luminosity (suns): 540,000
