It appears to be 316 million years old, and 80 stars have been counted in the group. The brightest star is 9.7m (180 times brighter than the Sun). It lies 31,100 light years from the galactic center and 170 light years below the galactic plane. Observations: C8 at 83x. A rich group (Steve Coe: "lumpy 'oatmeal' background"), it has a NE-SW axis. Averted vision picks up a lot of detail on this one. Note the 9m triangle on the SE edge. The rich field competes very powerfully with it, making it one of those clusters that does not stand out particularly well. Model (where the Sun is a baseball): Its diameter would be 5,510 miles with stars 740 miles apart. Distance (LY): 4,200 Luminosity (suns): 1,400 - 59 - Zone 184 Moderate NGC 2311 Other Names: Collinder 123, H VIII 60 Astronomical League Program: Herschel 400 Club Rating: 3 M Position: 0658-0435 Type: Oc Dimensions: 7' Class: III 2p Cluster population: 50 Magnitude: 9.8 Notes: The brightest star is 12m. Observations: C8 at 104x. A delicate knot. Note the three 8m stars to the NE, and use averted vision.
