It was discovered to be a binary by Robert Hooke in 1664 while he was looking for a
comet. Wrote Hooke: "I took notice of two small stars very near together; a like instance
to which I have not else met with in al lthe heavens."
At this distance (determined by parallax), the main stars are at least 380 AU apart, and
the third component some 11,000 AU out! (For a comparison, the Solar System [Pluto’s
orbit] is only about 80 AU in diameter.)
The A star is an Alpha CVn variable.
The B star is a magnetic variable (Alpha CVn type) and the C star is itself a very close
binary (the companion is 13m and 1.7" away).
The Cc pair does not share the proper motion of the AB pair, so Cc is probably an
optical alignment.
The AB stars are members of the Pleiades Group.
- 16 -
Zone 131
The southern star is a magnetic variable (Alpha Canum type), with a period of 2.607
days and amplitude of 0.02 m.
Burnham found the C star in 1878. He later found it to be a close, dim double (1.7").
This pair does not share the PM of the AB pair.
The stars show common proper motion.
