Observations:

faint smear to the S end of your

brilliant 20 Vul. The S end is
richer. I counted 37 stars, with
many triangles dominating the

Dimensions: 70' x 6'
Notes:
This is the western piece of the great Veil Nebula, or Cygnus Loop Nebula. It also
goes by the name of the Network Nebula, while the eastern piece is called the
Filamentary Nebula. The entire complex is also known as the Cirrus Nebula and the
Bridal Veil Nebula. About as complicated as a phone book of "Smiths".
William Herschel discovered it in 1784.
It is 70 light years in diameter. It was formed by a supernova 30,000 years ago.
Observations:
C8 at 104x. If you have a nebular filter, use it here. It appears as a faint, ghostly wisp
running N-S just near 52 Cyg. The N end is brighter than the S. With high powers, you
should be able to see some knots and "twisted rope". An O-III filter makes a stunning
difference! At the 2002 Nebraska Star Party (8/6/02 UT, seeing 5 of 5, transparency 5 of
5) , this nebula with the C11 and an O-III filter looked three dimensional! Several friends
came to the eyepiece and all went away with variants of "Wow!" or "My gosh!"
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
Its diameter would be 9,830 x 843 miles.
