Astronomical League Program: Caldwell Club; Herschel 400 Club; Urban Deep Sky
Club
Position: 2326+4233
Type: Pn
Dimensions: 32" x 28"
Class: 4
Magnitude: 8.9
Notes:
Its diameter is about 20,000 AU. The central star's surface temperature is 75,000o K,
but is too faint to pick up with an 8" scope. The nebula's density is only 10,000 atoms per
cubic cm.
Observations:
C8 at 206x. Fuzzy at low power, it looks very good under high power, where you can
see a ring. It has high surface brightness. Lacaille saw a nucleus and two ovalrings.
C11 at 115x. Very bright and very blue. Large and round. At 193x, the blue color
was even more pronounced. At 339x, it lost a little attraction. The O-III filter improves
the contrast greatly, but does not really bring out any more detail.
Model (where the Sun is a baseball):
Its diameter would be 90 miles.
Distance (LY): 1,800
Luminosity (suns): 71
