AB 1822: 14.9 @ 861, but it was known to Piazzi in 1792. His measurements of its
high proper motion (5.22" per year @ 52) led him to name it "The Flying Star." Over
100 measurements.
The A star is 48% as large as the Sun, 60% as massive, and only 6.5% as bright; the B
star is 43% as large, 50% as massive, and 3.8% as bright (and is an infra-red source).
The AB stars are at least 84 AU apart. The orbit may take 653 years or so (De
Cara/Veca, 1948). But Josties (1981) gives 722.0 years. Maximum separation (34") will
occur in 2100. Extremely high common proper motion pair.
AC 1907: 306.1 @ 196. 3 measurements. C has a dark companion, about 8 times the
mass of Jupiter. The orbit takes 4.8 years, and there is lively debate about whether or not
this object is a brown dwarf or a planet.
AD, AE 1 measurement.
Aa (10.50m) 1918: 157.1 @ 31. 1921: 140.6 - @ 30 -. 2 measurements.
Only 10% as bright as the sun, it is the first double star whose parallax was measured
(Besel, 1838). [Parallax as a useful means of determining stellar distances is limited from
earth to measurements of about 0.03" or larger due to atmospheric effects. This means
that earth-bound parallaxes can give distances out to about 100 light years accurately.
The Hipparcos mission was able to measure parallaxes as small as 0.002", since it does
not need to look through a turbulent atmosphere, and hence help us determine accurate
distances out to around 1,600 light years.]
It is the most observed double star in the sky with over 34,000 photos and 2,000
professional visual observations.
