What We Will Be Learning In May
*3D will be harvesting and tasting food
from the CAS Learning Garden this month!*
Reading Workshop: In reading workshop, we will
begin our author study unit. Readers will make generalizations across Patricia Polacco’s books and look for
similar writing techniques and character traits in multiple books. They will use their knowledge of the author
to help them make predictions and notice when the author goes against what they usually do. Readers will be
able to identify and discuss the author’s message and
theme in Polacco’s wonderful books!
Writing Workshop: Writers are immersed in our new
realistic fiction unit! We have read and studied various examples of realistic fiction to understand character, setting, problem, solution and point of view.
Writers will gather ideas for their own stories in
their writer’s notebook, using timelines or scene organizers and story mountains to organize their
thoughts. Students will continue drafting stories by
adding appropriate details and developing their characters by using internal and external characteristics.
Math: In math this month, we will be finishing our
Time and Temperature unit. The third graders have
done a really great job learning all the different
ways that we can tell time (specifically by using the
words “past” and “to”). Next, we will be starting Bar
Models using multiplication and division. These chapters require the students to use the math facts that
they have been practicing all year. The third graders
should continue to practice multiplication facts every
night!
Social Studies: Our next social studies unit will be
about New Jersey’s state government and economy.
Science: In science, we have been learning about
sound. We have been doing many hands on experiments that teach us about sound, vibrations, and how
sound travels. We then used our scientific thinking
to explain how it happened. Our Sound test is on
May 20th!
