MESSAGES: Reading Programs: Both the “Booking with the Bears” and the “Six Flags Read to Succeed” Program can be accomplished by using the same number of reading minutes. In order to receive credit, just staple the sheets together; there is no need to fill out both sheets. However, keep in mind that the Booking with Bears requires 1,000 minutes, whereas the Six Flags only requires 360 minutes. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me! Ms. Hurt’s th 4 Grade Classroom News November 24, 2015 MATH: The students will use place value understanding and properties of multiplication in order to solve problems. They will illustrate and explain calculations by using equations, arrays, and/or area models. Students will be able to use an Algorithm, Partial Product and Lattice strategy to solve 2 digit by 2/3 digit multiplication problems. We will be moving onto division so make sure you keep working on Multiplication facts! READING & LANGUAGE ARTS Students understand how to use text structures to identify important information in nonfiction text. The students are applying this knowledge in their interest based project during our TAG time. We have been learning how to use the “Spy Kit” Context clues strategy to find unfamiliar words in text. We will be working on writing a good explanation for written response questions. We will be starting the spelling program, Words Their Way. I am also starting a way for students to do some extra skill practice in reading. If the students would like some extra practice, I will have the “Spectrum Grade 4” reading sheets for the students to complete. These sheets may be completed at school if finished with class work or for homework. Their grade will be considered extra credit and will be tallied up at the end of the trimester. This is an optional activity but a way for students to practice a variety of reading comprehension skills. SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES NOTES: We will move onto identification of rocks & minerals. We will be starting our unit on the Northeast region.
