November Kindergarten News In literacy we will review and continue to work with all letters and Jolly Phonics sounds. In literacy we will be reading and writing the sight words are, see, at and was In Shared Literacy we will read the books One, One is the Sun, In the Mirror, Moccasins and Hello. In Reading Fundamentals we will continue to work in our Fiction Unit1. The students will learn to retell familiar tales by identifying and describing the characters, setting and the main events in sequence. 2. The students will learn to distinguish between realistic fiction and fantasy by noticing the details in the story. 3. The students will examine how words and pictures are used to move stories along and develop character and plot. 4. The students will learn to understand the elements of fiction by noticing when characters encounter a problem and work towards a solution to that problem. 5. The students will learn to identify the antagonist in a traditional tale, as well as the conflict and solution or resolution in that tale. 6. The students will learn to notice similarities and differences in books by comparing and contrasting two stories and discussing how characters are similar and different. 7. The students will learn to infer characters’ feelings and traits by thinking about what is happening in the story, studying the characters’ facial and body language, and listening to what the characters say and think. 8. The students will learn to think about how characters face and solve problems and then identify the theme or lesson learned at the end of the story. 9. The students will learn to describe key details in the illustrations and tell a realistic story from beginning to end. 10. The students will learn to infer and talk about character traits by using textual evidence. 11. The students will learn how to identify relevant and useful information to help them remember important details in the story. In literacy we will continue to write in our journals and continue to work on the concepts of using finger spaces between words and punctuation at the end of a sentence. In literacy we are also working on having the students spell by themselves by slowly saying the word and writing down the sounds that they hear. In math we will o o Finish Module 4-Counting and Cardinality (numbers beyond 10) Measurement and Data (learn the language related to length) Begin and complete Module 5-Counting and Cardinality (representing numbers with concrete materials) Operations (understanding addition and subtraction) and Algebraic Thinking (generate and analyze patterns) We will continue to work on recognizing, printing and understanding quantity (using a ten frame) for numbers 11-20. In social studies we will be learning about Native American Indians who lived in the Lake Zurich area. In social studies we will be creating Native American headbands and learning to use Native American symbol writing. In science we will begin the Physical Science Unit-properties of objects and how things move. We continue to have the students work on making sure their work is neat and not rushed.
