Fast Facts 2013 College Overview Rio Hondo College is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2012-2013. Since students first enrolled for the 1963-64 academic year, approximately 1,000,000 students have been served by the college. More than 20,000 students enroll each semester in a wide variety of transfer preparation as well as career and technical programs. Today, more than 1,000 employees, including faculty members, counselors and staff, help students reach their educational goals. Students may select from among 52 associate degree programs and 53 certificate programs of study. AccessRIO, a state-of-the-art electronic student records and registration system permits students to take care of their student-related business on their schedules. A multi-modal emergency notification system is in place. Additionally, the new Certified Nurse Assistant program provided more new employees to help meet regional health care worker needs. Nationally, Rio Hondo College ranks 87th on the “Top 100” list of Associate Degrees awarded in all disciplines to minority students; 39th for degrees awarded to Hispanic students, 29th on the “Top 50” list of colleges awarding Associate Degrees in homeland security, law enforcement, firefighting and related protective services.. The College fields 16 intercollegiate athletic teams, and is home to an active student government organization which supports a vibrant college environment and sponsors an eclectic assortment of clubs and interest groups. Now entering the final phase of a major $245 million facilities bond construction program, Rio Hondo College is prepared to better serve students in contemporary and technologically advanced learning environments. New satellite educational centers in South Whittier and El Monte will bring essential college classes to the more remote parts in the College service area.
