Assuming that the workshop topics listed below were offered at a convenient time for you, please indicate for each whether or not you would attend (select one per row) 1 Meeting/Arranging Caldenar Online Apr 30, 2012 1:51 PM 2 I would like in-depth workshops on an aspect of using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. I wouldn't attend basic workshops. Apr 30, 2012 12:20 PM 3 I need more workshops. Apr 27, 2012 9:34 AM 4 Longer workshops with opportunity to begin to develop materials for actual classes and/or apply technology. I hour isn't long enough for most of these topics. Apr 25, 2012 6:15 PM 5 Structuring college success for non-traditional students Apr 25, 2012 4:24 PM 6 I would like more professional development in the area of Student Behavioral Health issues, how these issues present in the classroom, and what Rio faculty & other professionals can do to help the individual and the class. Apr 25, 2012 1:21 PM 7 Campus Safety, Disaster Preparedness, Apr 25, 2012 1:01 PM 8 Some of the answers here are deceptive. It may appear that I am saying "maybe, depending on what," but in reality I am saying "probably not, but I can't answer with a definitive 'no' unless I have more information." For example, regarding collegial best practices exchange, if I am talking with other folks who teach in/around my area, then it is a definite maybe. If it is folks from PE or some area totally different from what I teach, then almost certainly the answer is no. It all depends on the circumstances. Apr 25, 2012 12:49 PM 31 of 42 Page 4, Q1. Preferred session format: Check all formats that would be of interest to you. 1 There is a leadership group, how about an online teaching group with Certificates. It could be a combination of online and in person. Apr 30, 2012 3:10 PM 2 Learning Professionals Retreat Weekends Apr 30, 2012 1:53 PM 3 In the past many training opportunities interest me but they are usually scheduled on Thursdays around 1 or 2. This day/time does not work since I am adjunct. Apr 26, 2012 8:58 PM 4 Scheduling TIME of day for sessions is probably the most critical element of format planning if ADJUNCT participation is considered. Apr 25, 2012 4:28 PM 5 Online would be the most effective with our busy schedules. Apr 25, 2012 1:05 PM 6 During the term, longer sessions (2+ hours) would almost certainly need to be on Friday or Saturday, and they would need to be *very* compelling in order to get me to come to campus. Something running half a day on a Friday or Saturday would need to extra extra compelling or I won't attend. For example I was up the other morning at 3:30 a.m. in order to attend an online conference put on by Wolfram Research (Mathematica), because it was extremely compelling, and it started at 8:00 a.m. eastern time. But coming in on a Friday-- unless it coincides with a division/department meeting-- means you need to teach me how to walk on water or something. Seriously... please don't get me wrong, but I think I should answer directly and forthrightly. I'm not going out of my way for blackboard training, for example. Apr 25, 2012 12:49 PM 7 It would be really helpful to to provide all these sessions through Adobe Connect so faculties who can't participate in person can still attend via webinars or Blackboard. I am 1.5 hours away from the campus. It will make help greatly in terms of time and commute. Apr 25, 2012 12:46 PM 32 of 42 Page 5, Q1. What do you and your department need to make the assessing of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) or Service Area Outcomes a more meaningful and useful process? 1 I believe gathering the information and knowing exactly what do to with it instead of just completing it to by do. May 1, 2012 2:34 PM 2 Actual participation from ALL faculty in our discipline May 1, 2012 1:07 PM 3 We are ok. May 1, 2012 9:13 AM 4 Meet together by discipline and reach agreement based on course objectives. May 1, 2012 7:55 AM 5 For me personally, I should follow up more on the total outcome of the SLOs... I feel as though once I submit the information nothing else is takes place... (my own personal goal) Apr 30, 2012 7:27 PM 6 Specific examples of how SLOs have been used to improve instruction Apr 30, 2012 6:46 PM 7 I teach one class so I am not that directly involved; perhaps investigating new ways for assessment of the objectives Apr 30, 2012 5:46 PM 8 Clear directions from ACCJC. Apr 30, 2012 3:10 PM 9 It woould be great to use terms access to SOL Apr 30, 2012 1:56 PM 10 More communication with colleagues teaching the same subject. Apr 30, 2012 10:33 AM 11 Figure out how to conduct program level SLOs and why. Apr 28, 2012 3:15 PM 12 Invite part-time faculty to department mts to include and update us on SLOs Apr 28, 2012 1:01 AM 13 I need to know that the other professors are not making up phony numbers. Apr 27, 2012 11:23 PM 14 A common final exam may be appropriate to asses of Student Learning Outcomes for a course taught by various instructors. Apr 27, 2012 3:49 PM 15 I have tried to gain access to SLOutions for new courses that I have developed and conducted. After several emails over 2+ year I cannot get access to courses to enter required data. No responses to emails. Apr 26, 2012 9:00 PM 16 This question assumes that SLOs are useful and meaningful as we currently do them. I would suggest starting from fresh and develop a view of assessment. Apr 26, 2012 4:21 PM 34 of 42 Page 5, Q1. What do you and your department need to make the assessing of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) or Service Area Outcomes a more meaningful and useful process? 17 The more the process is straightforward and easy to do, the more people comply... and the more meaningful data is collected. That's been the case in my department, I think. The SLOlutions software has helped with this. Apr 26, 2012 3:12 PM 18 More time to meet; we are so understaffed we hardly get the time to be off-desk at the same hour to meet Apr 25, 2012 8:54 PM 19 If we all had access to the SLO part of access Rio. As an adjunct, I do not have access. Apr 25, 2012 5:04 PM 20 Standard assessments for benchmarks Apr 25, 2012 4:30 PM 21 NA Apr 25, 2012 4:22 PM 22 An informed and experienced Dean who understands SLOs and assessment to lead the faculty in SLO development. Apr 25, 2012 3:06 PM 23 A more uniform method of assessment. Apr 25, 2012 2:25 PM 24 More hours in the day Apr 25, 2012 2:01 PM 25 ?????? Apr 25, 2012 1:54 PM 26 A clear explanation of how to revise SLOs. Apr 25, 2012 1:24 PM 27 We're ok Apr 25, 2012 1:14 PM 28 We have identified this as a huge concern and are doing a workshop at the end of the semester to address this and many other issues Apr 25, 2012 1:11 PM 29 time to set up more assessments Apr 25, 2012 1:00 PM 30 I think many students come to the class under prepared. It's hard for instructors to keep them in the class room if they are not committed to stay due to job, work-study and family issues. Students often drop classes in the middle of semester. If "numbers" is not the primary thing the department is looking after, we need to come out with better ways to assess SLOS. Therefore, the result can be meaningful and useful. Apr 25, 2012 12:55 PM 31 Talk about the summary of results for each SLO. Apr 25, 2012 12:52 PM 35 of 42 Page 5, Q1. What do you and your department need to make the assessing of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) or Service Area Outcomes a more meaningful and useful process? 32 Developing Student learning outcomes is not one size fits all in my opinion so the context of development needs to clearly relate every stakeholders bottom line. I would like to see more cross-functional stakeholder engagement if it does not already exist in some other fashion. Apr 25, 2012 12:45 PM 33 Taking SLO seriously and making them a tool to improve studnent learning. Apr 25, 2012 12:32 PM 34 Maybe a reevaluation of the ones currently used, to assess effectiveness and need for revision (?) Apr 25, 2012 12:27 PM 35 Nothing in particular, we are happy with our process. Apr 25, 2012 12:10 PM 36 Keep them short, less than five words. Apr 25, 2012 12:08 PM 37 It would be ideal to have review/training of assessing the results and creating new SLO's. Apr 25, 2012 12:07 PM 38 I don't believe that either area is meaningful or useful, as the data gathered from collection is spurious and meaningless. As presently structured it can't be improved. What suggestions do you have to improve the clarity, layout etc..of this assessment? 1 A brief explanation of some of the choices provided. Apr 30, 2012 7:27 PM 2 none at this time. Apr 30, 2012 6:46 PM 3 none, it works fine Apr 30, 2012 5:46 PM 4 Assessmetns access to Caldenar Apr 30, 2012 1:56 PM 5 Because Microsoft Office products are familiar to Rio Hondo employees, I think a more detailed survey just on MS Office might be useful: can you do x, y, or z with Word, for example, to find out the topics that could be targeted in training. I was excited to go to an Excel training that turned out to be so basic that I learned very little that I could use. The workshop also taught formulas I will never need and the things I hoped to learn were not covered. This kind of thing could be prevented by surveying potential workshop attendees about what they can already do with the software and even what they hope to be able to do after the workshop. Apr 30, 2012 12:35 PM 6 The yes and no buttons were not properly placed for some questions. So it was difficult to know if I was selecting the choice I wanted. Apr 25, 2012 1:24 PM 16 Stay away from experts and involve Rio faculty in an open discussion to find a solution. Follow this with another discussion as to what worked andwhat did not. Allow cor the flexibility to make the recommended changes. Do not allow Apr 25, 2012 1:12 PM 41 of 42 Page 5, Q3. What suggestions do you have to improve the clarity, layout etc..of this assessment? administrators in these discussions we need to hear from the faculty who deal with students not administrators who may or maynot be interested in how it looks on some form. 17 Explain terms that you list so I am more able to determine if I want a workshop in that area. Apr 25, 2012 1:04 PM 18 In general, I think the best bang for our buck comes from stuff that is streamed online 24/7. I think we have a lot of folks here on campus who can share compelling knowledge, which might be of interest to a large audience if it is convenient enough to access, but they lack a venue or a critical mass of interested parties to justify doing a face-to-face training session. Or they lack the ability to record such a training session in which they share their knowledge, passion, etc. I'd like to see us pursuing some way of capturing things that may be of interest. For example, can we record someone as they teach powerpoint tricks or how to edit questions in Diploma test question banks or whatever? If not, what would it take to make that happen? That's my $0.02. Apr 25, 2012 12:56 PM 19 Need to think about the above question and review my list of contacts & resources from several years in social services Apr 25, 2012 12:27 PM 20 This quick assessments are convenient; so therefore, none.
