What does it mean to be an
“outstanding” student?
Rio hondo college
Congratulations on being named an Outstanding Student for
2013-14! A faculty member at Rio Hondo College has
nominated you for your impressive performance in the
classroom. And, since you are actually receiving an award this
morning, it means several instructors agreed you were the
most deserving student in their department this year. But what
does it really mean to be “outstanding”?
“Outstanding” means, among many things, “standing out.” The
dictionary uses the terms “prominent . . . conspicuous . . or
striking.” In this case, it means your academic achievements
“stood out” among in your classes this year. Compared to
others, you excelled academically, and indeed
you were noticed!
“Outstanding” is also defined as “distinguished.” This implies
more than just “standing out.” Distinguished people possess
something more than a strong mind or special talent or physical
ability--they apply themselves in ways that are
unique and
inspiring.
So this morning we gather to celebrate the uniquely inspiring
way in which you have stood out as a student at Rio Hondo.
We honor you not only for what you have done, but for the
distinguished person you have become in your pursuit of
learning. Each of you seeks truth and knowledge for a special
reason. And for this, we consider you truly “outstanding”!
