Leadership Academy
2010-2011
The Rio Hondo Leadership Academy is being founded to enable the college to “grow
it’s own” leaders. While the experience cannot guarantee “promotion,” the Academy
is designed to enhance people’s capacity to be more effective leaders at all levels of
the campus.
Program Components and
Expectations
Topics will include (but aren’t limited to):
Theories & Models of Ethical Leadership
Self-Awareness: Assessing & Reflecting on Who You are
as a Leader
l Effective Communication
l Conflict Resolution
l Team and Trust Building
l Leadership in Action: Campus Improvement Project
l
l
Topics will be addressed via
guest speakers
self-assessments
l reflection on outside readings, case studies and participant experiences
l individual assignments and group discussion
l experiential exercises in and out of workshop sessions
l

Time commitment
overnight retreat before fall semester begins*
l 9, six hour sessions, 1 Friday a month (likely 9-3)*
l 6-10 hours each month in outside reading/assignments and other related activities – arranged around own
schedule & done on “own” time
l
Who can apply?
Any permanent full time employee or permanent part-
time classified staff person
(*Faculty will receive FLEX credit, managers and staff will
receive release time for retreats/workshops that take place during regularly scheduled hours.)
l

Acknowledgement of Academy Commitment
Those selected will be expected to participate in all program activities in their entirety. Per the calendar of
dates, this will include:

An overnight retreat before the fall semester begins
l
9, six hour sessions 1 Friday a month
l
6-10 hours each month for outside reading and related activities to be arranged
around your own schedule
Certificate of completion awarding at Board Meeting
l
I understand that if I am selected and unable to meet program requirements for attendance and participation, I may be
withdrawn from the Leadership Academy for that year.
