NEW RIO HONDO COLLEGE STUDENTS TAKING ONLINE CLASSES ONLY
Overview
The following tables respond to issues in the following question: “How many students in the Fall 2012
term are completely new to Rio Hondo and are taking all of their classes online?” Because currentsemester records in Banner do not include Units Attempted, Tables 2 and 3 are included to provide data
for Spring 2012. The three tables include two types of first-time students: RHC students in their first
semester of college and students in their first semester at RHC after transferring from another college.

Interpretation
The data indicate that a relatively small proportion of RHC students are new to the college and taking all
of their classes online. The majority of these students are first-time RHC transfers rather than first-time
college students. Also, most of the online-only, first-time students take only one or two classes per
semester. A total of 80 first-time students (27 new college students and 53 new transfer students) took
a full-time course load via online classes only in Spring 2012.

Interpretation
Table 1 presents a 7% difference in Retention Rate between ANTH110 and SOCI110; Table 2 presents a
1% difference in Success Rate. Tables 3 and 4 provide comparisons between the actual and
mathematically expected figures for Retention and Success. (These comparisons are the basis for the
chi-square test.) Table 5 indicates a statistically significant difference in Retention between the courses.
SOC110 has a higher Retention Rate and the difference is statistically significant. The strength of
association between Course and Retention is 0.097. This is slightly below 0.1, which is generally
considered a “small” association. Table 5 does not indicate a relationship between Course and Success.
There is a statistically significant difference in Retention Rate between these ANTH110 and SOCI110
classes, but it is not necessarily a causal relationship. Questions to consider when interpreting the data
include the following:
 Are there demographic differences between students in the two courses that might contribute to
differences in Retention Rate?
 Are there academic differences between students who enroll in the two courses (e.g., major, GPA,
previous coursework) that might contribute to differences in Retention Rate?
 Are there differences in grading patterns between the two courses that might contribute to
differences in Retention Rate?
 What percentage of Withdrawals in ANTH110 is initiated by the instructor?
