Grab your family, friends and neighbors to join 4-H for Maryland Day 2013 on Saturday, April
27th. Come and explore the world of the University of Maryland. Throughout the campus there are
fun-filled activities, demonstrations, exhibits, performances and other events that will demonstrate
the impact of this world-class university. Various 4-H clubs will have table presentations through
the campus so be sure to stop by and support your fellow club members. There is something for
everyone at Maryland Day – bring the entire family!
4-H Fair Parade Theme
The Montgomery County Fair is fast approaching. Is your club planning to enter a float or
walking unit in the 2013 Fair Parade? The theme this year is “Plenty to See From A-Z”. Get your
club members together and start designing your entry for the parade! Entries are due to Jeannine
Shriver a the 4-H Office by Thursday April 25th at the latest. The winning suggestion will receive
$20.00 in 4-H bucks for their club!
Wills Fair – May 18th
The Wills Fair website is now up and ready. This is a spring show held at the Howard County
Fairgrounds that is pretty low key and offers a great way to get you and your animals some
experience before the county fair. The website can be found at:
http://extension.umd.edu/news/events/sat-2013-05-18-1215-r-n-wills-fair. Deadline for entries is
April 19th. Entries must be filled out and mailed to 4-H Department, Carroll County Extension,
700 Agriculture Center, Westminster, MD 21157. Don’t send entries to the county office since
they don’t need signatures. The educator will be sent a copy to review and check off by Carroll Co.
Dairy Judging
We are looking for new kids to participate, particularly in the junior and intermediate age
brackets. Beginner training starting as soon as possible. Practices with the entire group will begin
in early to mid-May and last through the summer. For those that make the county team the state
contest will take place the Saturday of Labor Day weekend at the State Fairgrounds from 8:00
A.M. through mid-afternoon.
New potential judges are of GREAT interest!
Livestock Judging
If you are interested in learning what the judges are looking for at the fair, learning how to
describe animals and how to pick out the best ones that will win, judging is for you. You don’t
have to have any of these animals to be involved, just a desire to learn about animals. We focus on
sheep, swine, beef and meat goats. Judging will teach you valuable public speaking skills. We are
beginning this year off with several office practices and then we will head out to local farms to
judge live animals. The first two practice dates are May 9th and May 13th. If you are planning on
coming or are interested in learning more about livestock judging please contact me at
dgordon3@umd.edu or call me at 301-590-2813.
Fair Animal Exhibitor Orientation
All 4-H animal exhibitors (this is all animals even pets, dogs, cats, etc.) at this year’s
Montgomery County Agricultural Fair will once again be required to attend an exhibitor
orientation meeting. Topics will update you on new rule and procedure changes for animal and
public health, 4-H rules, and fair policies, as well as helpful tips for having a positive fair
experience. The sessions again will be offered at 8:30am at all 4 workdays. If you cannot attend
any of these trainings you need to contact David Gordon, dgordon3@umd.edu or 301-590-2813 to
schedule a makeup time.
4-H Market Animal Exhibitors
If you are a 4-H member and plan to have market hogs, lambs, or goats this year you are required
to fill out the 2013 Market Animal Registration Form and return it to the 4-H office by May 27.
These forms will be mailed out to the members of the Sheep and Swine, and Meat Goat clubs. If
you are a member carrying one of these projects and in a different club please contact the 4-H
office to have a form sent. You can also find the form here:
http://extension.umd.edu/sites/default/files/_docs/programs/4H/Livestock%20Registration%20Form.pdf. Make sure you fill out both sheets. In addition all
market hogs, sheep and goats must attend the Montgomery County Weigh-in on June the 1st at
8:00am. Here they will be officially weighed and tagged. If they are not they will not be allowed to
show at the fair.
Animal Leases and Project Cards
This is just a friendly reminder that all breeding and performance animal leases are due to the 4H office no later than June 1. Copies of these leases can be downloaded on the 4-H website. You
must also fill out and turn in the release form. All of the documents can be found online.

Horse and Dog project members are required to turn in project cards on their animals also due
June 1. If we do not have these cards on file you will not be allowed to exhibit at the fair. Your
club leaders should be able to provide you with these cards in the coming month or you can contact

Poultry, Rabbit and Cavy Registration Form
One of the newer rule changes is that the state now requires all of the poultry, rabbit and cavy
members to register their animals just as our other livestock breeds have been required to do for
some time. The registration is done on the standard state form and must be turned into our 4-H
office by June 1st. Below are the instructions for filling out the form and the form itself. Please
take the time to review this new rule and complete the required paperwork. If you have any
questions please feel free to contact our office.

Quality Assurance
Maryland 4-H On-Line Animal Husbandry & Quality Assurance (AH&QA) Program Now Open
for 2013
All Maryland 4-H members enrolled in alpacas, beef, dairy, goats, horse and pony, poultry,
sheep, swine and rabbits are required to complete the Maryland 4-H On-Line Animal Husbandry &
Quality Assurance (AH&QA) Program to be eligible to exhibit their project animals in 2013
Maryland County 4-H and State 4-H Shows.
4-H’ers are required to complete the on-line training program when they reach each 4-H age
division (Juniors (ages 8-10), Intermediates (ages 11-13), Seniors (ages 14-18) – all as of January 1
of the current year) OR when as Intermediate and Senior 4-H members, they choose to show a new
species since last completing the program within their age division.
The on-line program gives youth the opportunity to fulfill the Animal Husbandry and Quality
Assurance training requirement via internet from their home, school or local library. The AH&QA
program has voice narration, so the material is shared in both written and oral form. Members will
be asked to respond to questions to evaluate knowledge at different points during the program.
There are two Levels to the program: one level is for Junior members and a second level is for
Intermediate and Senior members. Members will be automatically taken to the appropriate Level
according to the birthdate entered on the registration screen. The program takes about 45-75
minutes to complete, depending on which level is being completed. When members register for the
program, they will be provided a unique Passcode. Members should write their Passcode down
and keep it in a safe place! If a member needs to stop the AH&QA training in the middle of the
program, he or she may return to the program where they left off by entering their Passcode on
Page 1 of the program. ALL members completing the program in 2013 (or any portion of the
program) must register and a NEW PASSCODE will be assigned. Passcodes from prior years are
no longer valid.
A member must be LOGGED IN for the system to track their progress and record their
completion of the program. There is a note at the bottom of each slide indicating the member’s
status. When logged in, the message will read “Welcome, [Member’s Name]. Log out?”. If the
member is not logged in correctly, the message will read “You are not currently logged in. Your
progress will NOT be recorded”.
For 2013, members will have access to the AH&QA program from March 15 through July 31st.
Members MUST complete the AH&QA training no later than July 31st. Counties may
establish a completion deadline earlier than July 31 to meet the needs of the local program.
Members may go directly to the AH&QA program at https://webtools.moo.umd.edu/AHQA/ or a
link to access the AH&QA program will be posted on the Animal Science Program Resources
page of the Maryland 4-H website at http://extension.umd.edu/4-h.
Upon completion of the program, members will have an opportunity to print a Certificate of
Completion for their records. It is suggested that members keep the Certificate of Completion with
their animal health papers (CVI forms, etc.), registration papers, and other animal records. Each
member’s progress will be kept in a statewide database and their County 4-H staff will receive
notification that they have completed the AH&QA training.

Husky Power Dog Sledding Trip
On February 23, 2013 the Montgomery County Kids N' Dogs 4-H club took a field trip to
Accident, MD to visit Husky Power Dog sledding! We got a tour of the place, including the dog
area, the demo trail, and the transportation wagon. We learned about the history of dog sledding
from the couple who run the program and have been dog sledding for years. Afterward, we all got
to take a run in a sled (which was on wheels!) Boy was that a wild ride! The dogs LOVE running
the trails and were so excited to be taking us. I was one on the first ride, so the dogs were very
energetic and I got to enjoy a fast paced ride through the snow and woods. It was an awesome
experience!
I learned a lot about dog sledding that I never knew before! Some of the facts even surprised me!
If you're a dog lover, a lover of adventure, or embrace new and rare experiences, Husky Power
Dog Sledding is the place to go!

Our 4-H Interstate Exchange Group has been hard at work fundraising! The group has
successfully run two food booths at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, held a silent auction,

The group of 10 4-H’ers will be heading to Montana in June and before then will be working on
other various fundraising events. The group is still collecting clothing, which can be dropped off at
the 4-H Office. Lightly used clothing, shoes, children’s toys, fabrics, linens, and belts are all
accepted. They are also still collecting empty ink cartridges that are name brand like HP, etc.
Those can also be dropped off at the 4-H Office.
In May Mixed Bag Designs is helping us with our fundraiser and they offer tons of recycled
bags, grocery bags and all the bags and packs you need for a completely litter-less lunch! All you
have to do is shop online at http://www.mixedbagdesigns.com/earth-day?fundraiserid=218655 and

Dahlia Workshop
Saturday, April 6, 2013, provided beautiful weather and a great turnout, of over 30 participants,
for the the Dahlia Workshop sponsored by the Back in Time 4-H Club and the National Capital
Dahlia Society (NCDS). Over thirty 4-H kids from many different Montgomery County clubs
came out to learn about dahlias as the NCDS shared their passion for these beautiful flowers.
Each of the 4-Hers in attendance was able to pick five (5) tubers of their choice to take home and
nurture. In the coming weeks more instruction will be offered by the NCDS on how to
successfully transplant the tubers, prune the plants, and stage flowers for entering in the fair.
On Sunday, May 19, at 1:30 p.m., the NCDS will be assisting 4-H kids with transplanting plants
in the Dahlia Exhibition Garden at the Farm Park in Derwood. This garden is at the end of the
parking lot near the Activity Center and next to the Master Gardener's area. Plants will be
provided (keep yours to plant at home). All are welcome. We home to see YOU there!
