Dairy Judging We are looking for new kids to participate, particularly in the junior and intermediate age brackets. Beginner training starting as soon as possible. Practices with the entire group will begin in early to mid-May and last through the summer. For those that make the county team the state contest will take place the Saturday of Labor Day weekend at the State Fairgrounds from 8:00 A.M. through mid-afternoon. New potential judges are of GREAT interest! Livestock Judging If you are interested in learning what the judges are looking for at the fair, learning how to describe animals and how to pick out the best ones that will win, judging is for you. You don’t have to have any of these animals to be involved, just a desire to learn about animals. We focus on sheep, swine, beef and meat goats. Judging will teach you valuable public speaking skills. We are beginning this year off with several office practices and then we will head out to local farms to judge live animals. The first two practice dates are May 9th and May 13th. If you are planning on coming or are interested in learning more about livestock judging please contact me at dgordon3@umd.edu or call me at 301-590-2813. Fair Animal Exhibitor Orientation All 4-H animal exhibitors (this is all animals even pets, dogs, cats, etc.) at this year’s Montgomery County Agricultural Fair will once again be required to attend an exhibitor orientation meeting. The registration is done on the standard state form and must be turned into our 4-H office by June 1st. Below are the instructions for filling out the form and the form itself. Please take the time to review this new rule and complete the required paperwork. If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office. The on-line program gives youth the opportunity to fulfill the Animal Husbandry and Quality Assurance training requirement via internet from their home, school or local library. The AH&QA program has voice narration, so the material is shared in both written and oral form. Members will be asked to respond to questions to evaluate knowledge at different points during the program. There are two Levels to the program: one level is for Junior members and a second level is for Intermediate and Senior members. Members will be automatically taken to the appropriate Level according to the birthdate entered on the registration screen. The program takes about 45-75 minutes to complete, depending on which level is being completed. When members register for the program, they will be provided a unique Passcode. Members should write their Passcode down and keep it in a safe place! If a member needs to stop the AH&QA training in the middle of the program, he or she may return to the program where they left off by entering their Passcode on Page 1 of the program. ALL members completing the program in 2013 (or any portion of the program) must register and a NEW PASSCODE will be assigned. Passcodes from prior years are no longer valid. A member must be LOGGED IN for the system to track their progress and record their completion of the program. There is a note at the bottom of each slide indicating the member’s status. When logged in, the message will read “Welcome, [Member’s Name]. Log out?”. If the member is not logged in correctly, the message will read “You are not currently logged in. Your progress will NOT be recorded”. For 2013, members will have access to the AH&QA program from March 15 through July 31st. Members MUST complete the AH&QA training no later than July 31st. Counties may establish a completion deadline earlier than July 31 to meet the needs of the local program. Members may go directly to the AH&QA program at https://webtools.moo.umd.edu/AHQA/ or a link to access the AH&QA program will be posted on the Animal Science Program Resources page of the Maryland 4-H website at http://extension.umd.edu/4-h. Upon completion of the program, members will have an opportunity to print a Certificate of Completion for their records. It is suggested that members keep the Certificate of Completion with their animal health papers (CVI forms, etc.), registration papers, and other animal records. Each member’s progress will be kept in a statewide database and their County 4-H staff will receive notification that they have completed the AH&QA training. VIP Day Logo Art Contest! Email edwardmhogan@gmail.com Husky Power Dog Sledding Trip On February 23, 2013 the Montgomery County Kids N' Dogs 4-H club took a field trip to Accident, MD to visit Husky Power Dog sledding! We got a tour of the place, including the dog area, the demo trail, and the transportation wagon. We learned about the history of dog sledding from the couple who run the program and have been dog sledding for years. Afterward, we all got to take a run in a sled (which was on wheels!) Boy was that a wild ride! The dogs LOVE running the trails and were so excited to be taking us. I was one on the first ride, so the dogs were very energetic and I got to enjoy a fast paced ride through the snow and woods. It was an awesome experience! I learned a lot about dog sledding that I never knew before! Some of the facts even surprised me! If you're a dog lover, a lover of adventure, or embrace new and rare experiences, Husky Power Dog Sledding is the place to go! -submitted by Grace Hotung New Website for "It's a Horse Thing!" by Ethan Benadon The website for 'It's a Horse Thing' 4-H club is now up and running!
