Valley Urbanites On Saturday, August 31, 2013 the Valley Urbanites Horticulture Team traveled to the Maryland State Fair for the annual Horticulture Judging Contest. The team had been working hard all summer to prepare. Every week their leader, Myrtle Sturtz, would bring in numerous samples of plants, vegetables, shrubs, trees, etc. With the help of Mrs. Sturtz, Susan Trice and Patty Grove, the members would practice identifying and judging the samples. They even took a trip one week to Catoctin Mountain Orchard to identify plants there. The results were as follows: Meghan Cole took 4th place overall for the Juniors. For the Intermediates, Claire Edwards took 4th, Caroline Edwards took 5th overall and 1st in trees/shrubs, and Aubrey Cole took 10th place overall. As a team, the Intermediates placed 2nd. For the seniors, Emma Mullineaux placed 6th. It was a fun day and the members are looking forward to returning for the competition next year. Traveling alongside the Potomac River, they carried their food and gear on their bikes, and camped along the trail at night. They experienced days of rain and lots of mud along the way, but also learned lots of history and discovered wonderful camaraderie and the chance to push themselves to the extreme. They completed their trip at the trail’s terminus in Cumberland, Maryland on August 11th after biking 184.5 miles in five days! Special thanks to all the 4-H parent volunteers who helped make the trip possible (and particularly to those who rode with the group).
