Calico Clovers
With the conclusion of the 151st Great Frederick
Fair, the Calico Clovers 4-H Club members have
found themselves at the end of another very successful fair! Club members participated in a great
number of animal shows, such as swine shows,
goat shows, sheep shows, alpaca shows, rabbit
shows, as well as some others. Members also entered many crafts, baked goods, sewn garments,
pictures, and many other creative and original
building entries that were exhibited in the 4-H
Building throughout the fair week. Congratulations to all club members who exhibited their projects at the fair this year – you all did so well!
In addition, Calico Clover members also were represented in the Annual 4-H Royalty Contest on the
first Friday night of the fair. Members Ian Sanville,
Erin Jones, Sarah Heiland, Rachel Summers, and
Amelia Summers were all participants in the contest, as well as Sara Arnold, who handed over her
crown as 4-H Queen at the contest that night. At
the conclusion of the event, club member Ian Sanville was crowned the 4-H King, while Erin Jones,
Sarah Heiland, Rachel Summers, and Amelia Summers were awarded as 4-H Ambassadors. Best
wishes to all on the Royalty Court for a fun and
fulfilling year soon to come!
Valley Urbanites
On Saturday, August 31, 2013 the Valley Urbanites Horticulture
Team traveled to the Maryland State Fair for the annual Horticulture Judging Contest. The team had been working hard all
summer to prepare. Every week their leader, Myrtle Sturtz,
would bring in numerous samples of plants, vegetables, shrubs,
trees, etc. With the help of Mrs. Sturtz, Susan Trice and Patty
Grove, the members would practice identifying and judging the
samples. They even took a trip one week to Catoctin Mountain
Orchard to identify plants there. The results were as follows:
Meghan Cole took 4th place overall for the Juniors. For the Intermediates, Claire Edwards
took 4th, Caroline Edwards
took 5th overall and 1st in
trees/shrubs, and Aubrey Cole
took 10th place overall. As a
team, the Intermediates placed
2nd. For the seniors, Emma
Mullineaux placed 6th. It was a
fun day and the members are
looking forward to returning
for the competition next year.

High Adventure Club
On August 7th, twelve members of the 4-H High Adventure Club
(ages 10-18) embarked on a bike trek along the C&O Canal Trail,
starting from its origin in Washington, DC. Traveling alongside
the Potomac River, they carried their food and gear on their
bikes, and camped along the trail at night. They experienced days
of rain and lots of mud along the way, but also learned lots of history and discovered wonderful camaraderie and the chance to
push themselves to the extreme. They completed their trip at the
trail’s terminus in Cumberland, Maryland on August 11th after
biking 184.5 miles in five days! Special thanks to all the 4-H parent volunteers who helped make the trip possible (and particularly to those who rode with the group).

sponsorships for the show, resulting in juniors being given over
$35,000 in prizes, including a calf given away in each breed!
Hannah Wilson of Middletown, a member of Middletown Valley Dairy
Club, took home a Guernsey calf donated by the Snider Homestead
Farm of New Enterprise, PA.

On Sunday Aug 4th we started planning for the
club decorations for the barns at the fair. We decided on the theme for all 4 species: beef, sheep,
swine and goats. Then on Wed. Aug 28th we started drawing and cutting out the decorations.
Tues. Aug 13th we held our monthly meeting. It
was hosted by Kira Zimmerman and her family.
The program was on civil air patrol. They brought
humvees and spoke of all the different tactics
used, what they wear and different rifles and guns.
The club got to take a ride in the humvees and to
look thru the scope of a rifle. Everyone enjoyed
the program.

great job judging.

to all that helped
out in any way, like
getting the children
to the practices/
contest, bringing
snacks, and for supplying materials
for us to use during practice. Also, thank you to Jimmy Roderuck for all his help coaching.
Please note that: **We will be looking for judgers next
Spring/Summer for the Avian Bowl and Poultry & Egg Judging.** You do not have to have poultry to judge, just a willingness to learn and to have fun.

Check Out The New Webpages
Be sure to check out the “New Members” webpage on our website: http://extension.umd.edu/frederick-county/4hyouth-development/new-members this is a great resource for information on Access, necessary forms, animal projects
and annual events.
There is also a contact page with information on the 4-H Staff and how to get in contact with them:
http://extension.umd.edu/frederick-county/4h-youth-development/contact-us
We will be working on an “Upcoming Events and Deadlines for Frederick County” sidebar that will have important
dates to remember.
UME Volunteer Information
Interested in becoming a certified UME 4-H Volunteer? Its a simple 3 step process:
1. Go to the Frederick County 4-H website http://extension.umd.edu/frederick-county/4h-youth-development/umevolunteers and fill out and return the 5 necessary forms by email or postal mail to: Attn: Lisa, UME Frederick County 4-H, 330 Montevue Lane, Frederick, MD 21702 or lstrong@umd.edu
2. After your completed paperwork has been returned to the office Lisa will contact you to schedule an over the phone
Interview which takes about 10-15 minutes.
3. After your Interview Lisa can sign you up for the online orientation training.
After these steps are done and all paperwork is in, the 4-H Educator will review your file and when approved you will
receive your 4-H Maryland Leader card. To keep your certified volunteer status current each year you will need to sign
a Renewal Appointment Agreement and a Behavioral Expectations Form.
