Inclement Weather Policy-Yes, the snowy season has arrived and will hopefully soon be over!!!
Just a reminder……if Cecil County Public Schools are cancelled for the day, there is early dismissal or after-school
activities are cancelled for the evening DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER ALL 4-H events are to be cancelled or during
the weekend if the Cecil County snow emergency plan is in effect in the county both the day or evening events are
cancelled.
New Dean at the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources
Dr. Craig Beyrouty officially started on November 1st as our new Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural
Resources at the University of Maryland. AGNR will be hosting a Meet and Greet reception for all faculty, staff, students,
alumni, stakeholders and friends at three different locations throughout the state to meet Dean Beyrouty. The dates and
locations are:

December 1st at the Riggs Alumni Center, College Park

December 14th at Western Maryland Research and Education Center, Keedysville
•
December 18th at the Elks Club Lodge #1622 in Easton
The time for all three events will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and light refreshments will be served. A flyer with more
information will be sent out in the next couple of days for you to print and share with others outside of the University.

National 4-H Congress Trip Recipient
Kudos to Olivia Richart for earning a trip to Atlanta, Georgia on November 27 – December 1, 2015. She will represent
Cecil County as a delegate to National 4-H Congress. Olivia will be traveling with fellow 4-H teens from across
Maryland. 4-H youth from across the United States and Puerto Rico attend National 4-H Congress.
State 4-H Dairy Judging Team Participation
Congratulations to Alison Ferver, Mary Lawrence and Lindsay Smith who participated as
members of the Maryland 4-H Dairy Judging Team. The team placed 7th in reasons and 9th
overall in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and 8th in reasons and 9th overall in Madison, Wisconsin.
Individually, Alison placed 7th in Brown Swiss, 14th in reasons and 13th overall and Mary
placed 18th in Holsteins at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest.

State 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Team Participation
Congratulations to Tyler McMullen and Olivia Richart who participated as members of the
Maryland 4-H Dairy Quiz Bowl Team. They traveled to Louisville, Kentucky and the team
placed between 9th and 12th overall. Individually, Olivia placed 5th on the written exam.

State 4-H Horticulture Judging Team Participation
Congratulations to Melinda Ward who was a member of the Maryland 4-H Horticulture Judging Team that
traveled to Orlando, Florida for the 2015 NJHA Conference and contests, October 9-12, 2015. Maryland's
4-H Horticulture Judging Team won First Place Team honors and Melinda placed 11th individually. Special
thanks to team coaches Susan Knight and Eileen Boyle, who dedicated their time to helping our team prepare
and to ensuring everyone had a wonderful time in Orlando! Pictured is Melinda Ward.
State 4-H Horse Bowl Team Participation
Kudos to River Shannon who participated as a member and team captain of the Maryland 4-H Horse Bowl
team to the All-American Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio in mid-October and Eastern National
4-H Horse Roundup in early November in Louisville, Kentucky. River placed 10th overall individually at
the Eastern National. Congratulations and Good Luck at both events! Pictured is River Shannon.

Congratulations to Monica Mason who was selected as the State 4-H Horse Volunteer of the Year.
Monica was recently recognized with the award at the Maryland 4-H Horseman’s Party in Timonium

State 4-H Archery Contest Results
Congratulations to Tyler Brown that placed 4th in both the 3D and FITA divisions for intermediate aged compound bow
participants at the State 4-H archery contest on October 17, 2015 at Camp Thendara in Hurlock.
State 4-H Shotgun Contest Results
Congratulations to the fourteen Cecil County 4-Hers that participated in the State 4-H Shotgun Match that was held on
Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Prince Georges County Trap and Skeet Center in Glenn Dale, Maryland. Ninety- one
participants from ten different counties competed in the areas of trap, skeet and sporting clays. In the junior division
Hunter Johnson placed 5th in the area trap and 5th in the area of skeet, in the intermediate division Noah Cage tied for 1st in
the area of sporting clays, 2nd in the areas of skeet and tied for 3rd in the area of trap and Sam Reyburn tied for 3rd in the
area of trap. Overall with combined scores in trap and skeet in the junior division Hunter Johnson placed 5th. Overall with
combined scores in all three disciplines in the intermediate division Noah Cage placed 1st, Heather Mullins placed 10th and
Sam Reyburn placed 14th. Overall with combined scores in all three disciplines in the senior age division James Sprout
placed 7th, Gavin LaSala placed 10th, Tyler McMullen placed 15th, Andrea Gold place 19th, Andrew Dvorak placed 22nd,
River Shannon placed 24th and Jennie McMichael placed 27th. In the Senior advanced division David McMichael placed
3rd, Austin Brown placed 4th and Matt Larrimore placed 5th overall. Thanks goes to the Cecil volunteers who served as the
4-H shotgun instructors for the Cecil County group.

Cecil County 4-H Reenrollments
Reenrollment time for the 2016 project is underway now and data entry will not begin until the State rolls over to next
year in early January. Please contact your club leader for additional information.
Cecil County 4-H Record Books
Completing a record book is not something most 4-Hers think of as fun but it can be one of the most
important things you do in 4-H. Learning to keep good records of the work you do is something that will
help you in school and may lead to a successful career, plus more. Record Books will be due to the
Extension Office by January 22, 2016 by 7:00 p.m. Your 4-H record book must be signed by your leader
prior to submission the county level, so please make those arrangements well ahead of the due date. Any
book submitted without a leader’s signature will not be accepted. Record books can be either typed or hand written.
Forms are available online at our website, http://extension.umd.edu/cecil-county/4-h-youth/record-keeping or in paper
form from the Extension Office. As a reminder we started using the new State Animal Specific Forms last year and
those will be the ONLY Animal Forms that will be accepted in 2016. Please do not use the Cecil County 4-H
Market Animal and Non-Market Animal Forms but use the specific species forms that the State developed. A
record book workshop will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 6:30 PM in the Cecil County Extension Office, Elkton.
Please RSVP your attendance by the day of the workshop. Record Book covers are available to be purchased from the
Extension Office for $3 each.
Out of State Trip Opportunities for Members 4-H Ages 14-18
As Cecil County 4-H senior aged members (14-18 as of 1/1/16), you are eligible to apply for four Out of State 4-H Trips.
These trips include the National 4-H Congress, West Virginia Older Members Conference, Camp Miniwanca and Virginia
4-H Conference. National 4-H Congress is a once in a lifetime experience, where youth from all across the nation get
together to address the needs and issues of youth, listen to motivational speakers and socialize with fellow 4-Hers.
Congress takes place at the end of November. West Virginia Older 4-H Members Conference is a Leadership
Development Conference that occurs at the end of June in Jackson’s Mill, West Virginia. Camp Miniwanca is a leadership
conference that occurs during the summer. Virginia 4-H Conference takes place in June in Virginia and is a 4-H
leadership development program. Nominees must be 4-H age 14-18. Applicants must be enrolled in 4-H and not older
than 4-H age 18 the year the trips take place. Youth interested in applying must do a 4-H resume, essay, fill out an
appropriate selection process application and receive an interview. This year’s essay topic is: Write an essay on your
most memorable 4-H experience that will highlight the positive experiences you have had in 4-H and what you would
share with someone 10 or 20 years from now.” Completed applications, essays and resumes are due to the Cecil County
Extension Office by January 4, 2016. Youth that are selected to represent Cecil County must be available for an
interview. The closest regional interview will be held on February 6, 2016 in Centreville, Maryland. You can access the

Robotics Club Open House
The Cecil County 4-H Robotics Club will be hosting a robotics open house on Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at the
Calvert Grange from 6:30-8:30 PM. Come out and check out the robotics opportunities. For more information place

Rocketry Workshop
Mr. Lowell and Mr. Mike will be hosting a 4-H Rocketry workshop on November 28, 2015 at 1pm at the Lowell Haines
Residence, Rising Sun. The cost is $10 per participant. Registration is due by 11/23. See the attached flyer for additional

Breakfast with Santa & Holiday Craft Workshop
The 4-H Junior Council is planning an exciting Breakfast with Santa on Saturday, December 5, 2015 and 8-10 AM and
Holiday Workshop from 10 A.M. until 1 PM at the Walls Activity Hall in Fair Hill. There is also a class offered for
adults. The cost for youth is $5 per person and for adults is $10 per person by November 23rd and $7 for youth and $12 for
adults after that date and at the door. This is a great workshop for having fun with 4-H friends from other clubs and to
make holiday crafts at an affordable price. The registration flyer is attached or can be downloaded online at:

Friends of Cecil County 4-H Benefit Auction
Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 5th! We will be holding another benefit to help the Cecil County 4-H
Program. There are several events scheduled that day at the Walls Activity Hall at the Fair Hill
Natural Resources Management Area (fairgrounds). Following the Holiday Crafts Workshop, the
Friends of 4-H Fundraiser will be held beginning with a roast beef dinner. Refreshments will be
available. Beginning at 7:00 P.M. there will be a Silent and Live Auction to raise money for our clubs
and county 4-H programs. Club donations are due by Monday, November 23th. Clubs can contribute
to the auction by getting items donated or creating a gift basket. One half of whatever your items earn
at the auction will go to your club and the other half will go to fund county 4-H programs like
Achievement Night. Any questions may be answered by contacting April or Vicki at the Extension Office. Please
support your local 4-H program! To make this event successful, everyone needs to help. If every club and the All Stars
can get items donated for the auction, we will have a great turnout!

Horse Bowl practices will be the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month at the University of Maryland Extension-Cecil
County 4-H Office (200 Chesapeake Blvd, Suite 1500, Elkton, MD) from 6:30-8:30 PM. Topics include: Horse Breeds,
Anatomy and Physiology, Nutrition, Feeds and Feeding, Health, Diseases, Disorders and Parasites, Reproduction and
Genetics, Equipment and Showing and Much More.

Cecil County 4-H Horse Judging Practices
It's that time of year! Horse Judging is just getting underway. We are looking forward to an absolutely terrific team again
this year. Last year's team had an incredible amount of success (and fun!) at the State Competition and we are looking
forward to the same this summer! Horse Judging practices will be the Second Wednesday of Every Month (until it gets
closer to competition time (of course). They will be from 6 pm to 8 pm at Drue and River's House, 1014 New London Rd,
Newark, Delaware 19711. We are just across the Cecil County line on Route 896, just a few minutes east of Fair Hill and
south of Landenberg. We will provide dinner, so please call, email or text Drue to let me know you are coming, and let me
know if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions. We are planning a great practice program, so we hope you can come

Maryland 4-H State Council
The Maryland 4-H State Council is the premier 4-H leadership opportunity in Maryland. Are you 13-18 years 4-H age in
2016 and passionate about growing the Maryland 4-H Program? Join the State Council! Applications for 2016 are due to
the State Office by December 15. Visit http://extension.umd.edu/4-h/4-h-program-areas/maryland-4-h-state-council for
the application. State 4-H Council General Membership applications are due December 15th. The General Membership
applications require county 4-H staffer’s comment & signature but there is NOT a separate recommendation form.
Council membership is open to all 4-Hers who are 13 or older (4-H age) in 2016. We are hoping a good number of
13-year-olds will want to join the Council team and grow into leadership roles when they become Seniors.
4-H Sewing Workshops 2015-2016
4-H Volunteer, Joan Gaffney, will be having county-wide Sewing Workshops every month starting in September. The
workshops will take place from 2-4 pm at Trinity Church, 105 N. Bridge Street, Elkton. If you would like to learn how to
sew, please attend the workshops. These workshops are open to any 4-H’er, including clovers, parent or volunteer. Please

Ownership Deadline for Market-Ready Beef and Dairy Steers for 2016
The State ownership deadline is January 1, 2016 for Market Beef and Dairy Steers. We will be tagging and weighing
steers on Saturday, January 2nd from 9-11 AM. Steers must be in the individual name of the 4-H member. For the Cecil
County Fair market ready steers must be born after August 1, 2014. Beef and Dairy Steers must be born after January 1,
2015 to be eligible for the Maryland State Fair 4-H participation.
2016 World Horse Expo 4-H Art Contest
The tenth annual Maryland 4-H Horse Art Contest will take place this year during Maryland Horse World Expo to be held
January 22-24, 2016 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, MD. The entry form will be e-mailed to all youth
registered with the horse project when it becomes available. Entries will be judged before the first day of the expo and
will be displayed throughout the expo.
Camp Counselor and Adult Staff Trainings for 2016
Like 4-H Camp? Will you be Actual age 15 or older in 2016 by August 8, 2016? Want to help more? If you are interested
in being a camp counselor the first training will be Saturday, January 8-9 at the Rocks in Harford County (as an overnight
lock in). Camp is always looking for more adult volunteers, even if it is just to teach a class, or come down for one
activity, so please contact us if interested. Please be aware that becoming a camp counselor or adult staff member is a very
big responsibility and does require commitment. These are the set dates and are not expected to change. Please mark your
calendars now. For the day trainings, you will need to bring $5 for lunch, or bring your lunch with you - there is a kitchen
available. If you have any questions about 4-H Camp or becoming a camp counselor, please feel free to contact Camp

Dairy Quiz Bowl Practices
The first Dairy Bowl Meeting for 2016 will be held on Monday, January 11th, at 7:00 PM in the Cecil County Extension
Office. Additional practices will tentatively be held on Monday evenings except on county holidays. 4-H Dairy Bowl
includes questions pertaining to both dairy cattle and dairy goats and is similar to "Jeopardy", except all questions are
dairy related. If you can't make the first meeting but are interested in participating, contact April at 410-996-5280 or
adhall@umd.edu.
Maryland 4-H Winter Camp
Winter camp registration is now open. The dates are the January 15-18th at the Patuxent River 4-H Center. They offer two
tracks: a camper track and a leadership track. This is a fun weekend that fills fast! It is an overnight event and they do
have some scholarship available if needed. Please see the attached flyer for information and contact the Cecil County
Extension Office to receive registration information.
Cecil County 4-H Horse Fun Day
4-H Horse Fun Day will be on Monday, January 18, 2016 with check in beginning at 8:30 AM and activities running from
9:00 AM-3:30 PM at the Calvert Grange on Rt. 273 in Calvert (2357 Telegraph Road, Rising Sun, MD 21911). A flyer
containing registration information will be included in the next newsletter or you can register online at:
http://extension.umd.edu/cecil-county/4-h-youth/cecil-county-4-h-horse-fun-day. Registration is due by January 13th.
This year’s horse educational topics include a variety of horse related educational topics and participating in horse science
learning stations on a variety of topics including Horsemanship Standards Knowledge testing. Resources can be found

opportunity to partake in ice breaker games, the horse hoopla t-shirt design contest, horse games, horse crafts and
socialize with other 4-H Horse project members. Pizza, drinks and snacks will be provided.
Hands-On Animal Science Classes
We will be offering fun, hands-on Animal Science classes for 4-Hers on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 6:30-8:00
PM in the Cecil County Extension Office, Elkton. You do not have to attend all the class topics. Please RSVP online at:

The State 4-H Animal Science Project Updates Webinar for volunteers will take place on Tuesday, December 15, 6:308:30pm via Connect. This session will provide an overview of Animal Science Program policy and event
changes/updates for 2016. This session is for Maryland 4-H Volunteers and Fair Volunteers working with 4-H members
in the Animal Science program areas. Registration information for this program will be forthcoming.
Winterfest Class Ideas

Other Extension Programs
Lambing & Kidding School
The 2015 Lambing & Kidding School, to be held Saturday, December 5 at North Harford High School in Pylesville,
Maryland, is now open for registration. The biennial school will feature separate, concurrent educational tracks for adults
and youth (8-18). The main speaker for the adult program will be Dr. Richard Ehrhardt, Small Ruminant Specialist at
Michigan State University. The youth program will be mostly hands-on. Pre-registration is required by November 20. The
registration fee is $40 for adults and $30 for youth. The registration fee includes morning refreshments, lunch, door prizes,

Poultry 101: Starting Your Small Flock
The program will take place on January 29, 2016 from 3:30-8 PM at the Baltimore County Agriculture Center (UMEBaltimore County Office), Cockeysville. Are you thinking about starting a small flock this spring but don’t know where
to begin? Look no further! This workshop will introduce you to everything you need to know to successfully begin raising
poultry. Topics will include zoning and legal restrictions on keeping poultry, housing needs, protection from predators,
how and when to source chicks, brooding peeps, nutrition and feeding, dealing with manure, preventing disease, and
regulation on the sale of poultry products. Presenters will include Dr. Jon Moyle, University of Maryland Poultry
Extension Specialist; Dr. Brigid McCrea, Delaware State University Poultry Extension Specialist; Amy Kovak, Maryland
Department of Agriculture; and Jennifer Reynolds, University of Maryland Poultry Extension Coordinator. Registration is
$30 per person and includes a hot dinner. Registration is required prior to January 18 and is limited to the first 30

Cecil County 4-H Rocketry Workshop
Cecil County 4-H members are invited to participate in a 4-H Rocketry Workshop on
Saturday, November 28th at 1 PM at the Haines home.
351 Wilson Road, Rising Sun, MD 21911
Mr. Lowell Haines and Mr. Mike LaMonica will be hosting the event.
The cost is $10 per child which will include one rocket, plus 2 engines. Launch
towers will be provided. These rockets are for beginners who are building for the
first time, and will take 30-60 minutes to assemble.
More advanced builders are encouraged to bring their own rockets to build and
launch.
