New Dean at the University of Maryland College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Dr. Craig Beyrouty officially started on November 1st as our new Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland. AGNR will be hosting a Meet and Greet reception for all faculty, staff, students, alumni, stakeholders and friends at three different locations throughout the state to meet Dean Beyrouty. National 4-H Congress Trip Recipient Kudos to Olivia Richart for earning a trip to Atlanta, Georgia on November 27 – December 1, 2015. She will represent Cecil County as a delegate to National 4-H Congress. Olivia will be traveling with fellow 4-H teens from across Maryland. 4-H youth from across the United States and Puerto Rico attend National 4-H Congress. State 4-H Dairy Judging Team Participation Congratulations to Alison Ferver, Mary Lawrence and Lindsay Smith who participated as members of the Maryland 4-H Dairy Judging Team. The team placed 7th in reasons and 9th overall in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and 8th in reasons and 9th overall in Madison, Wisconsin. Individually, Alison placed 7th in Brown Swiss, 14th in reasons and 13th overall and Mary placed 18th in Holsteins at the National 4-H Dairy Judging Contest. State 4-H Archery Contest Results Congratulations to Tyler Brown that placed 4th in both the 3D and FITA divisions for intermediate aged compound bow participants at the State 4-H archery contest on October 17, 2015 at Camp Thendara in Hurlock. State 4-H Shotgun Contest Results Congratulations to the fourteen Cecil County 4-Hers that participated in the State 4-H Shotgun Match that was held on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at Prince Georges County Trap and Skeet Center in Glenn Dale, Maryland. Ninety- one participants from ten different counties competed in the areas of trap, skeet and sporting clays. In the junior division Hunter Johnson placed 5th in the area trap and 5th in the area of skeet, in the intermediate division Noah Cage tied for 1st in the area of sporting clays, 2nd in the areas of skeet and tied for 3rd in the area of trap and Sam Reyburn tied for 3rd in the area of trap. Overall with combined scores in trap and skeet in the junior division Hunter Johnson placed 5th. Overall with combined scores in all three disciplines in the intermediate division Noah Cage placed 1st, Heather Mullins placed 10th and Sam Reyburn placed 14th. Cecil County 4-H Record Books Completing a record book is not something most 4-Hers think of as fun but it can be one of the most important things you do in 4-H. Learning to keep good records of the work you do is something that will help you in school and may lead to a successful career, plus more. Record Books will be due to the Extension Office by January 22, 2016 by 7:00 p.m. Your 4-H record book must be signed by your leader prior to submission the county level, so please make those arrangements well ahead of the due date. Any book submitted without a leader’s signature will not be accepted. Record books can be either typed or hand written. Forms are available online at our website, http://extension.umd.edu/cecil-county/4-h-youth/record-keeping or in paper form from the Extension Office. As a reminder we started using the new State Animal Specific Forms last year and those will be the ONLY Animal Forms that will be accepted in 2016. Please do not use the Cecil County 4-H Market Animal and Non-Market Animal Forms but use the specific species forms that the State developed. A record book workshop will be held on Tuesday, January 5, 2016 at 6:30 PM in the Cecil County Extension Office, Elkton. Please RSVP your attendance by the day of the workshop. Record Book covers are available to be purchased from the Extension Office for $3 each. Out of State Trip Opportunities for Members 4-H Ages 14-18 As Cecil County 4-H senior aged members (14-18 as of 1/1/16), you are eligible to apply for four Out of State 4-H Trips. These trips include the National 4-H Congress, West Virginia Older Members Conference, Camp Miniwanca and Virginia 4-H Conference. National 4-H Congress is a once in a lifetime experience, where youth from all across the nation get together to address the needs and issues of youth, listen to motivational speakers and socialize with fellow 4-Hers. Congress takes place at the end of November. West Virginia Older 4-H Members Conference is a Leadership Development Conference that occurs at the end of June in Jackson’s Mill, West Virginia. Camp Miniwanca is a leadership conference that occurs during the summer. Virginia 4-H Conference takes place in June in Virginia and is a 4-H leadership development program. Nominees must be 4-H age 14-18. Applicants must be enrolled in 4-H and not older than 4-H age 18 the year the trips take place. Youth interested in applying must do a 4-H resume, essay, fill out an appropriate selection process application and receive an interview. This year’s essay topic is: Write an essay on your most memorable 4-H experience that will highlight the positive experiences you have had in 4-H and what you would share with someone 10 or 20 years from now.” Completed applications, essays and resumes are due to the Cecil County Extension Office by January 4, 2016. Youth that are selected to represent Cecil County must be available for an interview. The closest regional interview will be held on February 6, 2016 in Centreville, Maryland. Rocketry Workshop Mr. Lowell and Mr. Mike will be hosting a 4-H Rocketry workshop on November 28, 2015 at 1pm at the Lowell Haines Residence, Rising Sun. The cost is $10 per participant. There is also a class offered for adults. The cost for youth is $5 per person and for adults is $10 per person by November 23rd and $7 for youth and $12 for adults after that date and at the door. This is a great workshop for having fun with 4-H friends from other clubs and to make holiday crafts at an affordable price. Friends of Cecil County 4-H Benefit Auction Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 5th! We will be holding another benefit to help the Cecil County 4-H Program. There are several events scheduled that day at the Walls Activity Hall at the Fair Hill Natural Resources Management Area (fairgrounds). Following the Holiday Crafts Workshop, the Friends of 4-H Fundraiser will be held beginning with a roast beef dinner. Refreshments will be available. Beginning at 7:00 P.M. there will be a Silent and Live Auction to raise money for our clubs and county 4-H programs. Club donations are due by Monday, November 23th. Clubs can contribute to the auction by getting items donated or creating a gift basket. One half of whatever your items earn at the auction will go to your club and the other half will go to fund county 4-H programs like Achievement Night. Horse Judging is just getting underway. We are looking forward to an absolutely terrific team again this year. For the Cecil County Fair market ready steers must be born after August 1, 2014. Beef and Dairy Steers must be born after January 1, 2015 to be eligible for the Maryland State Fair 4-H participation. 2016 World Horse Expo 4-H Art Contest The tenth annual Maryland 4-H Horse Art Contest will take place this year during Maryland Horse World Expo to be held January 22-24, 2016 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, MD. The entry form will be e-mailed to all youth registered with the horse project when it becomes available. Entries will be judged before the first day of the expo and will be displayed throughout the expo. Camp Counselor and Adult Staff Trainings for 2016 Like 4-H Camp? Will you be Actual age 15 or older in 2016 by August 8, 2016? Want to help more? If you are interested in being a camp counselor the first training will be Saturday, January 8-9 at the Rocks in Harford County (as an overnight lock in). Camp is always looking for more adult volunteers, even if it is just to teach a class, or come down for one activity, so please contact us if interested. The dates are the January 15-18th at the Patuxent River 4-H Center. They offer two tracks: a camper track and a leadership track. This is a fun weekend that fills fast! It is an overnight event and they do have some scholarship available if needed. Cecil County 4-H Horse Fun Day 4-H Horse Fun Day will be on Monday, January 18, 2016 with check in beginning at 8:30 AM and activities running from 9:00 AM-3:30 PM at the Calvert Grange on Rt. 273 in Calvert (2357 Telegraph Road, Rising Sun, MD 21911). Other Extension Programs Lambing & Kidding School The 2015 Lambing & Kidding School, to be held Saturday, December 5 at North Harford High School in Pylesville, Maryland, is now open for registration. The biennial school will feature separate, concurrent educational tracks for adults and youth (8-18). The main speaker for the adult program will be Dr. Richard Ehrhardt, Small Ruminant Specialist at Michigan State University. The youth program will be mostly hands-on. Pre-registration is required by November 20. The registration fee is $40 for adults and $30 for youth. The registration fee includes morning refreshments, lunch, door prizes, and resource materials (on a flash drive). There is an additional (optional) $20 material charge for youth. Poultry 101: Starting Your Small Flock The program will take place on January 29, 2016 from 3:30-8 PM at the Baltimore County Agriculture Center (UMEBaltimore County Office), Cockeysville. Are you thinking about starting a small flock this spring but don’t know where to begin? Look no further! This workshop will introduce you to everything you need to know to successfully begin raising poultry. Topics will include zoning and legal restrictions on keeping poultry, housing needs, protection from predators, how and when to source chicks, brooding peeps, nutrition and feeding, dealing with manure, preventing disease, and regulation on the sale of poultry products. The cost is $10 per child which will include one rocket, plus 2 engines. Launch towers will be provided. These rockets are for beginners who are building for the first time, and will take 30-60 minutes to assemble.
