Happy FALL everyone! With the county and state fair
behind us we look forward to a very busy fall.
A very big thanks is extended to many 4-H members
and their families as donations of cakes helped Mrs.
Joanne Wooters add more money to her active 4-H
scholarship fund.
In addition, a big thanks is extended to many
members for the helping hands they provided to make
the Caroline-Dorchester County Fair a huge success.

“Making the
Best Better”
Open House: 2014 is the 100 year anniversary of the National
Cooperative Extension System. Extension has been educating
and helping residents of Maryland learn life skills for a century.
We are having an open house with the goal of increasing public
awareness of our educational programs. Please plan to come
celebrate as we have invited local residents and partner organizations to join
our staff on this momentous occasion at our office (9194 Legion Rd., Denton).
This event will take place on October 30 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Please plan to
share what 4-H means to you and help the public better understand why you
and your family are active members of the county 4-H program. Wear your 4-H
t-shirt! This is a celebration you do not want to miss! Must RSVP by October 20.
Halloween Happening! Friday, October 10, 6-8 p.m. at
the 4-H Park, main building. A fun regional 4-H event is
planned for Talbot, Dorchester and Caroline County 4-H
members. This is your chance to meet and make new
friends from other clubs. Consider bringing a friend who
is considering joining 4-H as a way of welcoming him or her to the program.
The evening will include games, food, learning activities and a costume
contest. (Costumes are optional.) Please bring a side dish and/or a dessert to
share! Register by calling 410 479-4030 by October 3 so we can plan how
many to prepare for. Please provide your name, phone number, e-mail, and
number of youth and adults attending.
If you plan to raise and show beef as your 4-H project for 2015 you are required to own the animal
by January 1, 2015. Please let Ms. Charlotte Brown know of your intentions as soon as possible.
Gabrielle Parsley attended and enjoyed the Eastern Shore 4-H Camp, where she participated in the teen leadership track.
Way to go Gabrielle!
The Maryland 4-H State Rifle Match was held on Saturday, Sept. 6. The following members represented our countyjunior: Spencer Seaborne: 7th place; intermediates and seniors: Mark Hopkins: 12th place; Brockman Harris: 13th place;
Dustin Saathoff: 17th place; Taylor Dodson: 18th place and Isaac Dodson: 19th place. We are very proud of each member!
A big thanks to the club leaders Bob Fletcher, Linda Garrett and David Mielke.
Best of luck to both the Archer’s 4-H Club members as they participate in the upcoming State 4-H archery match and to
the Caroline County 4-H Shotgun Club as they compete in the State 4-H shotgun match.
The Eastern Shore Large Car show (truck show) was a big success. The following clubs were represented by helping with
the sales of drinks and parking cars: the 8 to 18 4-H Club; NCHS Green Club- Environmental Science Club; the Tailwaggers
4-H Club and the Silver Spurs 4-H Club. Each of these clubs will receive funds for their efforts.

following website: https://extension.umd.edu/walkmd to find out more about the program.
Please remember that keeping records is an important part of your project. Every member is encouraged to complete at
least one project during the year. A record book workshop for those needing help and new members will be held on
Monday, Nov. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the extension office.
Record Books will be due on Friday, January 23, 2015 at the extension office. Be sure to keep records too of your service
hours. In addition, if you are working on the Diamond Clover plans do not forget that they will be due at this time as well.
Special animal project records available online at: extension.umd.edu/4-h/4-h-program-areas/animal-science-resources.
Maryland 4-H has a new rule that will be followed strictly in 2015. Pleases remember that you must sign up for the projects
and actively work on them to enter exhibits in the various divisions within the state fair. Such as you can only enter flowers
if you are enrolled in the flower project.
Seniors: If you are interested in applying to attend the National 4-H Conference – applications are due by October 15. All
other national trip applications are due January 15. A senior portfolio is required. Let Ms. Sharon know if you need more
details. Go online to http://extension.umd.edu/4-h/youth-families/awards-recognition for more information.
Congratulations to our 4-H members! We had a wonderful fair this year and the effort and hard work of many of you
made for great memories. (Please keep track of your service time.)
Thanks to many for sharing their animal exhibits during the children’s program; members teaching the public about their
livestock projects; members working with the air rifle trailer- helping others learn about shooting sports; and 4-H
members serving as clerks and helpers during judging and set up and clean-up efforts, etc. The fair was a good
experience because many hands helped. Congratulations to the following 4-H members as they earned Champion and
Reserve Champion rosettes!

or in the community and tell others about 4-H. In addition, perform a community service project or think of
an even better way to promote 4-H. Do not forget to thank your club leaders as they invest many hours to
help you “make the best better” in your own 4-H work and efforts.
