Topics covered include functions of the male and female reproductive systems; pregnancy, childbirth, and prenatal development; methods of contraception; and sexually transmitted diseases. The difficulties facing teenage parents are emphasized. Additionally, the dangers of drug abuse including alcohol and tobacco, are taught in this course. Students research and present information about various psychoactive drugs. The importance of remaining drug free and the dangers of abuse are emphasized. Students practice decision-making techniques and refusal skills. Goals This course aims to: ● Give students in 8th grade the opportunity to develop health knowledge ● Practice life skills such as the state of physical, mental and social well being. ● Achieve health goals that protect them from risk behaviors. ● Obtain knowledge and skills in the following health related areas: male and female reproductive systems, decision making, alcohol, tobacco and drugs, and pregnancy and childbirth, Sexually transmitted diseases, ● Help understand and learn the physical, emotional, and social aspects of human relationships and sexuality and apply these concepts to support a healthy, active lifestyle. Resources Suggests Activities and Resources Unit 1 Overview Unit Title: Decision Making Unit Summary: Eighth grade students need an opportunity to develop knowledge and skills to help them make appropriate decisions, have the confidence to take risks, and be flexible and adaptable when faced with change and life transitions. This unit provides students with an opportunity to be aware of and to develop these various skills. In the decision making model students will be able to list possible options for solving the problem and weigh the possible consequences of each option to their decision. They will learn the importance of goal setting and begin to set some short and long term goals. Students will be provided with a list of possible diseases associated with tobacco use such as emphysema, liver disease, heart disease, and tooth and gum disease. Students will investigate the health risks posed to nonsmokers by second hand/passive smoking. Analyze the physical, social, and emotional indicators and stages of dependency.
