The EMS programs help provide lifelong learning opportunities to improve the quality of life for our diverse communities by providing occupational/technical training as articulated in the College's mission . Description of Degree/Emphasis/Certificates: The objective of this non-transferable degree is to train students with the necessary cognitive, psychomotor, and affective behaviors to provide advanced life support in the prehospital setting and to provide the necessary coursework to be licensed in the State of Nevada and nationally certified. This limited entry program offers a comprehensive and in-depth study of advanced life support skills which include pharmacology, advanced airway management procedures and skills, ECG interpretation and electrical therapy for specified cardiac patients. Associate degree recipients may see improved opportunity for managerial, clinical or educational advancement after sufficient field experience is obtained. The Paramedic program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee of Educational Programs forthe Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoA-EMSP). AAS Degree Prehospital Emergency Medicine Emphasis Goals/Outcomes: • • • Demonstrate competency in all areas outlined in the National Registry of Emergency medical Technicians - EMT Cognitive and Psychomotor examinations .. Exhibit proficiency in all technical skills required of emergency medical care and transportation of critical and emergent patients. Demonstrate professional attitudes and ethical behaviors consistent with the expectations of the profession, area employers and the local medical community. Please respond to the strategies by including the status, actions taken to respond to the strategy, projected timeline, and if resource issues are anticipated to fulfill the strategy. Unit Strategy #1 Program needs to establish a more focused recruitment plan to increase student diversity. Status: choose Complete& Ongoing Timeline: Started in 2014& continuing Action: This strategy is both accomplished and ongoing. The Saturday EMT course was removed and changed to a weekday course, which is now the first EMS course to fill consistently each semester. Also, with the exception of the Paramedic program, all EMT and AEMT courses are full and beyond full each semester. We are continuing to work toward this goal through our Bridge program and through additional marketing of the Paramedic program in particular. It is also anticipated the new Prehospital Emergency Medicine AAS degree will develop further recruitment opportunities. Anticipated Resource Needed: Marketing materials which will cost approximately u,000.00 per year. Unit Strategy #2 Status: choose Timeline: Complete 2015 Conduct a survey in an effort to determine why students are not qualifyinq for the certificate. Action: This strategy will go away in the next PUR. Many students do not qualifyfor the certificate as the certificate does not advantage them in the work place. The new degree is expected to take the place of the certificate. Anticipated Resource Needed: NIA Status: choose Timeline: Unit Strategy #3 Complete June2015 Conduct a needs assessment as recommended by the Program and Discipline Review Committee to determine if an Associate of Applied Science would be an appropriate degree to pursue. Action: The new Prehospital Emergency Medicine AAS degree was approved by the NSHE Board of Regents at their June 2015 meeting. Anticipated Resource Needed: NIA Unit Strategy #4 Complete the self-study and application for accreditation. Status: choose Ongoing Complete Timeline: July2014 Action: The Paramedic program accreditation was accomplished and awarded by the CAAHEP in July of 2014. The program now is engaged in the processes necessary to ensure ongoing re-accreditation. Anticipated Resource Needed: NIA Unit Strategy #5 Separate the Fire Tech and EMS/Paramedic advisory board meetings so that this program can have more effective and focused meeting outcomes. It has proven to be a more effective andfocused approach to working with the advisory committees on specific discipline issues. Anticipated Resource Needed: NIA Unit Strategy #6 Work more diligently to enhance the working relationship with Regional Emergency Medical Services Authority (REM SA). Status: choose Ongoing& Complete Timeline: 2015 onward Action: The program has been working over the past couple ofyears to enhance and improve the relationship with REMSA. This year, Fall 2015 we have two paramedic students engaged in internships with REMSA. The program will continue to work closely and collaboratively with R£MSA in the foreseeable future. Anticipated Resource Needed: NIA Status: choose Timeline: Unit Strategy #7 Ongoing 2015 Continue to address the issue of lack of clinical sites in Northern onward Nevada. Action: This issue has somewhat improved as the program has worked very hard to improve its reputation and credibility in the region. We now have agencies requesting our students for internships, particularly paramedics, thatformerly did not want to intern our students far poor quality reasons. However, as the program continues to grow and expand, our needs in particularfar field internship sites will continue to be a challenge. The program will be engaging potential field internship opportunities with agencies to our west in California in order to minimize this issue as much as possible. Anticipated Resource Needed: Staff time and funds, approximately s25oa. oo annually ta establish the contracts and funds for faculty travel for internship site visits with students and preceptors.
