... . .... . ATMCC November 7, 2012 TO: Mr. Paul Aberasturi FROM: Or. Marra C. Sheehan SUBJECT: Program/Unit Review for Performing Arts (\ ,' '\.. \ ) f Congratulations on your work with the program/ unit review for performing arts. I certainly appreciate the time and effort that you and your self-study committee have invested in this process. As you know, your self study has been reviewed by several constituencies and is now at the point where you and your dean will be working together to Implement the recommendations that were made. I concur with the recommendations put forth by Vice President Tuthill. A copy of his report along with that of your dean is attached. I understand that you and Carolyn Wray have been working with lance Bowen to ensure that all courses are on the assessment cycle and that all course assessment reports have been submitted. Additional recommendations that I am particularly interested in are: • • ·• Assess articulation agreements with UNR to ensure seamless transfer of TMCC students. (April 2013) Implement concrete ways to increase program completion rates. (April 2013) Develop a formal process to track graduates' initial job placement or transfer to another institution. (April 2013) I realize that this is a rigorous process, and I am committed to ensuring that it is a worthwhile one. Therefore, I hope that, as you continue to address the recommendations above, you will take advantage of the resources available to you and your department. Or. Bowen has agreed to offer his assistance as needed. A progress report will be due to your dean in April of 2013. Thank you for your outstanding effort to ensure TMCC remains an institution committed to excellence. Attachment Cc: Or. lance Bowen Dr. Armida Fruzzetti Or. Their student FTEs are relatively stable (Music FTE of 235 for Academic Year 201020 ll compared to an average of 234 annually over the previous five years; Theater FTE of l 03 for Academic Year 2010-20 ll compared to an average of 97 annually over the previous tive years; Dance FTE 27 for Academic Year 2010-2011 compared to an average of 23 annually over the previous five years). Retention rates for all programs are good: for Academic Year 2010-2011 the retention rate tor Music averages 81.5%, tbr Theater 85.5%, for Dance 81%. Graduate rates, however, are very disappointing: two Music A.A.S. degrees over the period 2005-2010, five Theater degrees, three Musical Theater degrees and one Dance degree. ummary action recommended for program/unit: The Perfonning Arts Programs continue as part of the 'vision of liberal Arts. Recommendations for development strategies and anticipated time lines: Curriculum: The Program Unit Review repeatedly asserts that the program and its courses provide ..participating students with significant and important life skills directly applicable to a broad amy of careers in the marketplace." Program personnel must develop and implement a two-year plan to add these specific work-related skills to their course and program outcomes and assess the extent to which students are achieving these outcomes. (Implementation Fali2012-Fall2014, assessment ongoing after) The program faculty must complete a program outcomes assessment no later than Spring Semester 2014. The Program faculty must complete course assessments (CARs) according to a regular cycle.( fall 2012, then ongoing) Enrollment: To ensure that the continued survival of the Perfonning Arts degree programs, Program directors and Chairs in conjunction with faculty, must identify and implement concrete ways to increase program completion rates. (Fall2012. then ongoing) Furthennore, the Program Directors and Department Chair must assess and document value added by program courses to udents and the community. (AY 2012113, then ongoing) Program Directors and Chair will work with TMCC articulation officers and the office of assessment and planning to assess articulation agreements with UNR and work to ensure seamless transfer ofTMCC students to baccalaureate programs at the university. This is a top priority and should begin immediately. (fall2012.then ongoing). There are a small number of Program completers. The Program faculty must endeavor to track graduates to determine their current job placement. (Fall2012/13, then ongoing) e Program must develop and implement by Spring Semester 2013 a formal process to track graduates' initial job lacement or transfer to other institutions. (Spring 2013. then ongoing) Resources: The Program/Unit Review states •• .. ..activities at the site already overwhelm the capacity of the building .." Along with the supposition that enrollments are continuing to increase, it is recommended that the Program coordinator and Chair develop a resource acquisition plan and collect data in support. (AY 2012/13, then ongoing) The Program/Unit Review also states that two of the programs are under-staffed in the areas of music and dance, however there is no defined strategy for seeking new faculty or resources. The Program coordinator and Chair should develop a staffing plan and provide assessment data to support the request. (AY 2012/13, then ongoing) Identify additional resources and/or actions necessary rrom each administrative unit ror implementation of recommended development strategies: Academic Affain: VP/AA&AS will gladly meet with UNR officials regarding music program articulation if that intervention would be useful. Our office can also assist in tracking employment status of recent perfonning arts students/graduates. Student Services: Finance: Human Resources: Faculty Senate: Other: Conclusion: Perfonning Arts has fine programs that generate a positive image of TMCC in the community, but so long as the department cannot demonstrate achievement of student learning outcomes, it will be at risk.
